Work hours and holiday is this right

Where I work if we want to take holiday we have to find cover for our shifts is the normal? as it can be a pain if we then can’t get cover There is only one of us in at one time so we work set days of the week. I’ve got holiday to use up and the days I requested are all looking in unlikely due to cover. In previous jobs I just requested holiday and then my manager or boss sorted cover

I guess it depends on your job. When I take holidays no one does my work (other than odd bits that might need attention) but in a lot of jobs it’s essential that there’s a certain number of staff in at all times. I’d expect someone to manage that though not leave it up to individuals to find cover.

Well you're entitled to take holiday so I suggest you ask your manager what you are supposed to do if you can't find cover.....

Leftphalange · 03/10/2021 17:38

I've never heard of this before but sounds a terrible policy. As above poster says you are legally entitled to your holiday days each year- what does your manager say when you query this?

You are. Entitled to your holidays but not at a time you request. If you can't sort cover, legally you could be allocated any time. If that's not a problem for you, just tell the boss to get on with it

StCharlotte · 03/10/2021 18:28

Doesn't that mean your colleagues have to work extra days? And you of course when you cover other people's days off?

Boathouse12 · 03/10/2021 20:25

Yes they work extra and so do I we all cover each other

So in theory I don’t actually get holiday I guess as say I get 10 days holiday an year and so does the other staff I cover there ten days holiday and they covers mine

Do you work part time and 10 days is your pro rata allowance?

What kind of work is it and where are you? If you're in the UK and not getting your statutory entitlement you should be thinking about what action you can take. Are you paid at least the NMW?

Doesnt sound right to me
