For me

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise totally believe this but don't live by it. I go to bed early these days so still have terrible insomnia so don't get up all that early but I try.

You are what you eat ditto.

Peppermint oil deters clothes moths - yes, I accept this and put it into practice.

What are yours?

Rain before seven, fine before eleven

This is really often true - if you wake up and it’s raining already it clears up by mid-morning. If it starts raining a bit later then it’s more likely to piss down all day.

I’m not sure about the early rising one though - I think it takes more than that!

A stich in time saves nine. Not great at putting it into practice though

Rhannion · 30/09/2021 20:46

What’s for you, won’t go by you.

MintyGreenDream · 30/09/2021 20:50

This too shall pass.

Fool me once shame on you.Fool me twice shame on me.

Mariell · 30/09/2021 20:53

Red sky at night, shepherds delight!

Guaranteed to be a lovely day the next day.

Mariell · 30/09/2021 20:54

Silence is golden.

BeaucoupFish · 30/09/2021 20:55

Empty vessels make the most noise

Durbeyfield · 30/09/2021 20:57

They ‘won’t make old bones’

Neither a lender or borrower be

Elieza · 30/09/2021 20:58

Ne’er cast a clout ‘til May be oot.

ie don’t wear fewer clothes until June as the weather may be changeable. Which is not what the saying originally meant however it works for me!

GoodnightGrandma · 30/09/2021 20:59

Once bitten, twice shy

GoodnightGrandma · 30/09/2021 21:01

The ‘early to bed…’ and ‘neither a borrower…’ are ones I live by.

Branleuse · 30/09/2021 21:01

You get what you settle for.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 30/09/2021 21:02

The devil makes work for idle hands.

Only boring people get bored.

Better drowned than duffers; if not duffers, won't drown. (OK, not old wives tale but my general parenting mantra.)

Speak the truth and shame the devil.

Amdone123 · 30/09/2021 21:37

I think Treat others the way you want to be treated is invaluable for me.
Definitely early to bed etc and Neither a borrower nor lender be....I wish I'd followed this in my early days. Would have saved a lot of heartache. I think it's sad that when people fall out , usually families, it's often about money.
You only regret what you don't do, is quite true.

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 30/09/2021 22:09

I love "look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves" ... My kids get bored of me repeating that one

HastySlander · 30/09/2021 22:11

Marry in May, rue the day

WishingYouAMerryChristmasToo · 30/09/2021 22:17

More haste less speed. A stitch in time. Early to bed. Neither a borrower or lender be. Red sky at night. Stupid is as stupid does. Be nice to those on the way up the career ladder as you might meet them on the way down. Be prepared. Measure twice cut once. A cup of tea is the best cure. Feed a fever starve a cold. Treat others as you want to be treated. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice Shame on you. Leopards don’t change spots - ever. Don’t tell me show me. The boxer isn’t afraid of being knocked down they are scared of now being able to get up. Thousands more …..

What does the duffers one mean?
Igneo · 30/09/2021 23:17

@Durbeyfield
Who won’t make old bones?

You either get good nails or good teeth. I have good nails but wish i had good teeth.

Purplewithred · 30/09/2021 23:29

Fine words butter no parsnips (a strong favourite, baffles many)

Mum used to say You get what you think you deserve - her version of you get what you settle for. Very true in my experience.

Re the "don't cast a clout til may is out" that actually refers to the May fly, which comes out for one day of the year then dies, and not the month of May. I only learned this recently

SillyYak · 01/10/2021 20:58

@Rhannion

What’s for you, won’t go by you.
I love this! Heard it for the first time this week funnily enough when a friend said it to me on the phone and I’ve already said it three times to my daughter.
