For me

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise totally believe this but don't live by it. I go to bed early these days so still have terrible insomnia so don't get up all that early but I try.

You are what you eat ditto.

Peppermint oil deters clothes moths - yes, I accept this and put it into practice.

What are yours?

Feed a cold, starve a fever. Or it could be feed a fever, starve a cold.

Best be on the safe side and stuff your face either way.

'All fur coat and no knickers'

Bloodypunkrockers - It's from Swallows and Amazons, in which the children do a lot of sailing. It's better to be drowned than stupid, but if you aren't stupid you won't drown.

Tempusfudgeit · 01/10/2021 21:53

The older I get the more 'Least said, soonest mended' rings true.

Beauty is but skin deep
I wish people would live by this more and appreciated the good that is in a person, and in themselves, rather than agonising over their body shape, how many calories they've eaten today, their tiny laughter lines at the age of 27, etc. Shallowness seems to be the trend probably due to reality TV.

I know the expression as Rain before 7, fine by 11 and it has come true so many times, including this morning, that I rely on it.

It's better to work on a crap project with brilliant people, than a brilliant project with crap people ie people are the lifeblood of the organisation.

What goes around, comes around Dish it out in life and you can bet it will come back to haunt you (seen that happen more than once)

don't meet trouble half way
Always do whenever in doubt
If you sense its not right, it isn't
Once a taker, always a taker

A son is a son till he takes a wife
A daughters a daughter all of her life

Seems completely true looking at my own family and friends.

You reap what you sow. Never a borrower or lender be. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Those are the ones I really try to live my life by.

FrDamo · 01/10/2021 23:30

My understanding on MAY in "ne'er cast a clout..." is that MAY refers to the blossom of the hawthorn. So not the month and not the the mayfly.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 02/10/2021 00:52

You eventually get the face that you deserve.

Trumpton · 02/10/2021 01:24

Never trouble trouble
Til trouble troubles you
For if you trouble trouble
It will surely trouble you

GoingOutOutNEVER · 02/10/2021 05:00

If you get a scratch, bruise you should spit on it with your first spit of the day!! Mother told me than when DC first started moving around he would move on his back and ended up with a red mark on the back of his head from the friction of the carpet.. it worked!!

OldTinHat · 02/10/2021 05:38

@Elieza there is some confusion regarding that saying in that is the 'May' referred to the month or the flower.

daisychain01 · 02/10/2021 06:29

birds of a feather flock together

you're known by the friends you keep

the apple never falls far from the tree
Boris Johnson is proof of this. He's followed in his father's footsteps.

All on a similar theme - people are influenced by the people they hang out with and can be tarred by their brush.

daisychain01 · 02/10/2021 06:32

The month of March "comes in like a lion and out like a lamb".

It depends what part of the country you're in. Where I live it's in like a lion and out like a lion some years!

DinosApple · 02/10/2021 06:38

Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning.
Always seems to be true. Beautiful sunrise, followed by a rainy day.

NewBeginning39 · 02/10/2021 07:23

Ride your own horse

GoodnightGrandma · 02/10/2021 07:35

If in doubt, do nowt.
This is another one I’ve found is true.

MrsDThomas · 02/10/2021 07:46

Rain before 7? Never heard that one, but living in Snowdonia, its bollocks. If it rains, it rains.

And you are what you eat is true. Eat a lot you will get fat.

My Nan used to say this! She thought your morning spit was poison and would kill the bugs. Told dh recently and he was bewildered so it's nice to see someone else has heard the same thing!

Don't point a finger where you never lent a hand

A stumble can prevent a fall

What begins in anger ends in shame

Character is higher than intellect

You won't get anywhere in life if you only travel on the sunny days

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/10/2021 09:01

Do as you would be done by.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. - It's definitely worth being polite and charming rather than confrontational if you want to get your own way.
