For me

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise totally believe this but don't live by it. I go to bed early these days so still have terrible insomnia so don't get up all that early but I try.

You are what you eat ditto.

Peppermint oil deters clothes moths - yes, I accept this and put it into practice.

What are yours?

Small jugs have big ears.

If the door doesn't open it's not yours to go through.

There's a lid for every pot.

You've made your bed, now lie in it.

Those who matter don’t mind and those who
mind don’t matter.

If it’s too good to be true, it usually is.

“Small jugs have big ears.“

What on earth does that mean Grin

"Buy cheap, buy dear."

One of my grandmother's sayings. Basically means that buying the cheapest option will work out to be the dearest in the long run, because it will have to be replaced sooner. It also nudges you to think long-term rather than give in to impulse buys.

It goes through my head automatically every time I make a big purchase, or buy clothing.

There's a lid for every pot

Clearly a saying from before the time of tupperware.

I ask St Anthony to help me when I have lost something. I am an atheist with no belief in saints! Yet it works! Taught to me by my grandmother who similarly had no religious faith.

My grandmother was the same and somehow it always worked and I would find the lost item very soon after saying the prayer!

Up before 7; dead before 11

StormOfSekhmet · 02/10/2021 13:33

Buy cheap, pay twice

Keladrythesaviour · 02/10/2021 13:42

You never need to take back what you don't say.
Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to.
Never give an instruction that won't be followed.

Something about cows, if they are sitting down it'll rain, if moving aboot the field, it wont.

GrealishHairband · 02/10/2021 14:02

I love the Swallows and Amazon’s one and try to apply it to my parenting at all times.

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold.

DogFoodPie · 02/10/2021 14:49

I believe in the bad things coming in threes.

indialily1 · 02/10/2021 14:56

Better to be an old man’s darling than a young man’s slave , my grandmother used to say this to me !

DogFoodPie · 02/10/2021 15:30

“Small jugs have big ears.“

What on earth does that mean

I've heard this said as Little pitchers have big ears.

It means children are listening to what you say so don't say something they shouldn't overhear.

Andante57 · 02/10/2021 18:17

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold

There’s a Confucian saying ‘he who seeks revenge should dig two graves’

Igneo · 03/10/2021 00:45

@Heruka
I think adding hair into the mix is most apt and will be including this from now on.

Howshouldibehave · 03/10/2021 00:55

Buy cheap, buy twice.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

This too shall pass.

An hour (sleep) before midnight is worth two after!

I've just thought of another one on this same theme.

*Holding on to resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die"

Andante57 · 04/10/2021 13:31

Daisychain yes that’s a good one too.
