Never heard of the red pill or new world order, what is this nonsense?

Hello, having recently joined MN I've had my eyes opened to a LOT but I'm seeing references to things like the red pill (was on a thread this week) and now a new world order. Are these some kind of cults? Where have I been living not to have seen or read about this rubbish lol?

I also wasn't aware how exposed to trolls and the media MN is so I've changed my username (again) probably being paranoid but after reading so many things maybe not HmmConfused

I've enjoyed a few troll threads that have since been removed disappointingly haha. Also to add, it's great to read posts and responses with punctuation and proper spelling and grammar Grin can we have more emojis though?

I think conspiracy theories grow from the distrust and suspicion surrounding the unseen figures who hold all the wealth and who call the shots in society. Ordinary people feel powerless and turn to conspiracy theories to rationalise their feelings of paranoia and seek solace with like minded people.

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/09/2021 10:03

You use your words here on MN, the few emoji built in suffice.

Ofc you may use those provided on your device anyway.

Just ignore redpill and nwo bobbins.

Neonplant · 30/09/2021 10:06

I have no idea where you've been living not to know this stuff. It's been around for decades. Unfortunately.

I've never heard of either apart from new world order on a thread here recently. I assume red pill is a Matrix reference where he takes the pill to wake up to how we are all being controlled?
CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 30/09/2021 10:10

I have heard of new world order nonsense but don't know about this red pill stuff - off to google

TheQueef · 30/09/2021 10:12

It's just boring old misogyny wrapped up in a trendy catchphrase to suit the times.
Sinister and pathetic but I wouldn't ignore it.

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/09/2021 10:12

Red pill is a reference to MGTOW or Men Going Their Own Way. This subculture is very misogynistic. They think women are all gold diggers and want to trap a man in marriage, specifically to divorce him and take half of everything he owns. So MGTOW are men that refuse marriage/commitment. They have girlfriends and was lyrical about how with their money they can attract twenty-something year olds no matter how old they get. They have sayings like “pump em and dump em”. They think all a woman has is her sexual attractiveness and that by 30, women are useless.

The MGTOW that cannot get a girlfriend are the Incels. And that is even more toxic. But it’s important to understand that red pill is linked both to MGTOW and Incels.

New World Order is a conspiracy theory that the 1% or world elites are plotting a totalitarian world government. It’s an off shoot of the Illuminati conspiracy theory. Lots of people get sucked into it and there were echoes of it in the Brexit debates and dialogue- the fear of an EU Army, the loss of national identity,...all fed by NWO theorists who saw EU as a stepping stone in the plot to get to a world government.

Thanks for the replies, it does sound sinister, I won't google though, I'll stay in my wee bubble I think after reading about the red pill in PP. The new thread re the OP listing her H weapons and stashing did give me the fear reading it.

Like most things I think they’ve taken a kernel of truth - a move towards more globalised governance because more globalised governance is needed for a lot of things - and spun out the worst possible outcome of that.

The whole “red pill” thing is about somehow making themselves a special club that has exclusive access to this knowledge - in reality there’s nothing special about this knowledge at all - we all know there is more global governance than there used to be and we all know why - because we kind of need it.

Either way, even if there were a NWO it would destroy them like ants so stockpiling weaponry wouldn’t help them, or you if you happened to be near them.

Staying in your own little bubble is a wise choice. I like mine too. It’s peaceful and cosy.

KeepTwirling · 30/09/2021 11:46

Yes you have. If anything you know enough to know to come to MN - the right place - to talk about it in the manner you have. In other words, you already know most people's opinion about it here WinkGrin

I'm a fellow bubble-stayer by the way.Smile

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 30/09/2021 12:00

Just to add you can use normal emojis here too.
We don't always just have to use our words on Mumsnet 😉

Mybalconyiscracking · 30/09/2021 12:06

Excellent podcast on Spotify..
Parcast, Conspiracy Theories, New World Order.

All sorts of stuff, great fun mostly and the male presenter has the sexiest voice imaginable!

Mybalconyiscracking · 30/09/2021 12:08

I thought red pill was a reference to the fact that we are all living in a computer simulation, like the matrix.
It’s seemingly what Elon Musk believes!

lubeybooby · 30/09/2021 12:16

It's all to do with the cult of Q Anon, which started out as a obviously 'entertainment only' roleplay group on 4chan and then started being taken seriously with almost every imaginable conspiracy theory part of it, from flat earth, moon landing faked, 9/11 an inside job, covid conspiracies, trump is still president and biden is a robot, anti vax... getting progressively more dissociated until the followers believe in Jewish space lasers causing forest fires and that every single democrat politician (and even every democrat American) is a child rapist and killer, so they can drink children's blood for 'adrenachrome'

it's a terrifying problem on a world scale and not addressed anywhere near enough - truly a cult but without one clear leader, infiltrating every country of the world and with seemingly no way to get through to these people

My uncle has well and truly fallen down the rabbit hole and there is no way of reaching him with sense. If he was American he definitely would have joined the domestic terrorists at the Capitol building, Jan 6th

I've had to read this a few times, wow i had no idea it was as bad as this!

lubeybooby · 30/09/2021 15:01

@ILoveYouMoreTheEnd yes, it's awful. I had to look it all up to try and understand what on earth was going on with my uncle.

It started for him as facebook conspiracy groups - then the algorithim picks up that you like conspiracies and recommends more of those groups to you. He thought he was going 'deeper' and 'uncovering more truths'

Those fb groups are clever to keep anything reportable off their groups - but they subtly lure the followers to unregulated apps like telegram, and the dark web where they draw them into believing the the increasingly insane theories.

At the heart of it all? Grifters who have realised how much money these desperately scared people will donate to 'help spread the word' and to help trump get back into power, because another theory is that trump will cancel all debt when he is back - families in the US have been ripped apart by believers taking out mortgages and loans to donate to these conspiracy scammers, because they believe it doesn't matter and will all be cancelled soon anyway

This is massively simplifying everything - it's very nuanced and people are drawn in gradually. But that's the basic bones of it.
