There's a rat in your toilet!

I saw this article which has really scared me now. To the point I'm getting a little phobic about going to the loo - though the lid is always clamped down and we have a cat!

Nothing new about this.

Neveratruerfriend · 29/09/2021 09:07

Sounds though that it's going to become more commonplace though.

Wtf have I just read

I'm really phobic and that's made me feel sick

applechips · 29/09/2021 13:41

There’s a rat in me kitchen!

Sorry couldn’t help it

LaBellina · 29/09/2021 13:44

It doesn’t help that rats are also extremely smart vermin….as the article says, close your toilet lid and you should be fine. Also I think having a cat might help, rats might not like to get out of the toilet if they can smell that there’s a cat or cats.

Deadringer · 29/09/2021 13:45

I remember reading something like that about 30 years ago, terrified me at the time but i think its just one of those things that happen on a very rare occasion. I have also been hearing that rats are getting bigger for about 50 years, they would be the size of horses by now if it was true.

Neveratruerfriend · 29/09/2021 14:11

Well I'm waiting for someone to ratify it here, that this is a thing Grin

We saw a rat clinging to the bird feeder a few weeks ago, which was a surprise.

Marmelace · 29/09/2021 14:14

Definitely don't read James Herberts' Rats, I did at age 10, I had nightmares for ages.

Tangledtresses · 29/09/2021 14:17

Saw a huge rat outside our garage recently even the local Tom cat avoided it...

starfish4 · 29/09/2021 14:21

My Mum has a plastic type hose connected to her toilets. It's believed rats chewed through it (under wall) and they gained access to the whole house. If anyone is really worried, there's something that can be inserted into the drain which stops rats/excess flood water getting past a certain point, but lets waste pass (she paid a pest control man to sort rats out (council unhelpful) and he was able to fit the device. Not had the problem since (10 years ago).

LowbrowVictoriana · 29/09/2021 14:28

My small skinny young cat brought in a mahoosive rat a few weeks ago. It was almost as big as her. I found it dead on the living room rug.
Hopefully its friends will have taken note!

I'm not too worried about them coming out of the toilet 🐀

Neveratruerfriend · 29/09/2021 14:28

Yes I heard about the drain flap thing, I may look into that.

I thank god we are a household of keeping the loo seats firmly down. We also have a cat but he can be part of the problem as he brings in the odd rodent from time to time (usually dead).

I'm afraid I am that woman from the old Tom & Jerry cartoons. As soon as a mouse appears I totally freak out.

Had to do the same as @starfish4 earlier this year. Pest control trapped 2 rats in the loft!!!

Lightswitch123 · 29/09/2021 14:33

Omg this is absolutely disgusting I will never be able to sleep again

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/09/2021 14:40

I have just invented a sturdy chicken wire grille that can be easily fastened onto the rim of the toilet bowl when not in use. I will be taking orders as soon as I can get a site up.

LoveMySituation · 29/09/2021 14:44

I've had a field mouse issue recently (I caught one, I know it's definitely that) and I got so paranoid about any in there(unlikely)that as well as the lid always being down, I put bleach in the loo last thing, with the idea they'll not like that..Please no one tell me it wouldn't workGrin

JerkintheMerkin · 29/09/2021 15:13

@LowbrowVictoriana after screaming the house down, I would have left the house and never returned. How on earth did you get rid of it?

Boredhimtodeath · 29/09/2021 15:15

I’ve suddenly gone very itchy! Trying to decide which pet to lock in each bathroom to stand guard.

Eve81 · 29/09/2021 15:16

I have been worried about a rat being down the toilet since I was a teenager, it has followed me into adulthood unfortunately. I have to check every before I go, during and after. Very annoying!

LowbrowVictoriana · 29/09/2021 15:35

@JerkintheMerkin haha, it was dead at least!

I picked it up by the tail (using a tissue) and dumped it at the bottom of the garden behind a bush. Hopefully it served as a warning to others!

Flufferty · 29/09/2021 15:42

My sister had a rat in her toilet which had swim up through the waste pipe. They can open the lid from the inside as well
