I'd really love some help please!

It's my husband's 40th birthday soon and we're off to London for the weekend. It's his actual birthday on the Saturday so I'm looking for somewhere special for breakfast and dinner. Does anyone have any recommendations please?Grin

There isn't really a budget as I just want it to be a lovely occasion.

Also if anyone has any recommendations of interesting things to do whilst down there that would be great!

ThanksSmile

People often recommended houtong in the shard or hakkasan, or duck and waffle?

I love these threads so just checking in.

Autumngoldleaf · 28/09/2021 20:17

Oh and Bob Bob Ricard.

DillonPanthersTexas · 28/09/2021 20:18

Where in London are you looking?

Autumngoldleaf · 28/09/2021 20:19

Op what are your interests?

I find the tower of London absolutely amazing to visit, so much history, well preserved as well as the amazing Crown jewels to see?

Or stroll around soho.. China Town and up to Covent garden?
Or down past Westminster... The eye.. Walk along South Bank.
I adore the musuem of London /tate modern and St Paul's... All close together or.. Mooch around Notting Hill.

Ting at the Shard is very special.

SquirmOfEels · 28/09/2021 20:20

Breakfast - Coppa Club near Tower Bridge. Actually they're good for dinner as well, but you have to book way in advance.

What sorts of things do you like to do?

If in Town in a Saturday, parkrun? The classic Bushy pilgrimage?

All great recommendations in PPs. I went to Coya recently, it's Peruvian. Something different and really great service. We also went to the OXO tower restaurant and the views were great and service was too. So many great choices!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2021 20:28

The Wolseley for breakfast?

littleone7 · 28/09/2021 20:29

Thanks for the repliesSmile

We go to London a couple of times a year but this time we're staying in a nice hotel and planning on splashing out. We're staying in Mayfair. We're also going to see Hamilton on the Sunday afternoon.

I'd looked at Le Gavroche but unfortunately it's fully booked. Last time we went to London we went to Clos Maggiore which was lovely.

We really enjoy just pottering around and seeing the different areas.

Second The Wolesley for breakfast.
If you like fish, we had a lovely dinner at J Sheekey in Covent Garden last week (voluminous celebs notwithstanding)

Haven't been for years but DH and I love a cultural stroll down the Southbank:
Tate Modern, see if there's anything on at the festival hall or the BFI, watch some skateboarding, browse the 2nd hand books.
We would always end up at the design museum and have posh lunch at the Blueprint cafe there.
The museum annoyingly moved to Kensington but looks like the cafe is still there. I really loved the food and the views there.
Have also enjoyed the Oxo Tower restaurant.

BasiliskStare · 28/09/2021 20:39

The Wolsey is nice.

The Ritz dining room is just lovely.

Autumngoldleaf · 28/09/2021 20:40

Have you ever looked at sketch?
Really unusual designs inside they have serval restaurant and one is Michelen stars? It's actually got the most atrocities website but if your goole image it you can see some pics but it's very very beautiful and unique.

IamJuliaJohnson · 28/09/2021 20:43

What about going up the oxo tower?! [not necessarily a real suggestion from me, just wanted to get the gold standard of euphemism on MN in there…]

Decorhate · 28/09/2021 20:45

The food here is amazing but you usually have to book months in advance

Rules in Covent Garden would be my suggestion, I’m taking my dad there soon

Autumngoldleaf · 28/09/2021 20:47

I've always fancied rules

Autumngoldleaf · 28/09/2021 20:50

I've never felt the wolsey has any wow factor?

BasiliskStare · 28/09/2021 20:51

Rules is a good shout - very old school as it were but the food is very good

Shoxfordian · 28/09/2021 20:52

Ah good to hear- it’s for his 70th and he likes old school food so I hope he’ll love it

looloo247 · 28/09/2021 20:52

If you're in Mayfair and enjoy tapas then definitely try El Pirata. Not flashy or posh, very traditional style but absolutely delicious tapas!

Mykittensmittens · 28/09/2021 20:55

Clos Maggiore. Especially the room with the flowers hanging from the ceiling!

DoThePropeller · 28/09/2021 20:56

I had a brilliant meal at Maison Francois in Mayfair last week. The comté gougeres are to die for and they have a pudding trolley of dreams!

J Sheekey always a good bet too.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 28/09/2021 20:57

I'm very fond of the original The Ivy in Covent Garden. Always a chance for a bit of celeb spotting there.

SiobhanSharpe · 28/09/2021 21:02

The Delaunay, Aldwych, for breakfast/brunch. It's from the same stable as the Wolseley but is a bit more formal, big on service and has lots of choices for breakfast, some with a middle-European/Viennese vibe and absolutely lovely pastries. All in all, very satisfying.
How about The Connaught for dinner? Chef Hélène Darroze is top notch, two Michelin stars...expect to pay accordingly!
