Hi my son is 6.5 years he will wee in the toilet but he won't poo. He's has autism he was given a potty chair for his age . Should I start pushing him to go In the toilet or should I just leave him and hope that one day he will decide to use the toilet?

Is there a time of day he usually poos? Around that time try encouraging him to sit on the toilet with the aim of just sitting rather than actually doing anything. Use a timer and give him something he likes such as a tablet or phone, set the timer for five minutes (or less depending on his tolerance) and at the end praise him regardless of whether or not he's done anything. The idea is that it gets him used to sitting on the toilet.

The website ERIC has lots of suggestions, advice, and information about toileting issues and is well worth a read.

It might also be worth speaking to your GP about a prescription for Movicol/Laxido to help encourage him to go regularly.

My dd was having the same issue. In the end I worked out that she was frightened of the splash, so I started putting the insert from her little toddler toilet down inside the bowl so that she would get used to going in the toilet. Eventually she learned to go without the insert.
Is this worth a try?

Oh never thought of that I will see if it will fit. Thank you
