Help please, I'm an idiot! Renewed my car insurance by mistake

I had it noted down that my insurance runs out at the start of October. Was thinking over the weekend I must start looking for quotes, then yesterday an email popped up from my current insurers saying my insurance was (auto)renewed for another year :o

I've checked today - as I usually shop around, and the premium is £150 more than the cheapest quote (and about £100 more than I paid last year).

Am I stuffed now and have I just cost myself £150? Or can I cancel and go elsewhere? Does anyone know?

Feel like such an idiot, I think I must've confused the renewal date with my home insurance (which does run out next Monday).

sorry that should have been a Shock not a Grin. Far from the latter at the moment, closer to crying!

you're in the cool off period, just call them and cancel

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 28/09/2021 14:36

when you set up your new policy you can require auto-renew not to be active, then that won't happen next time but you will need to be on the ball with setting up a new policy (but they remind you anyway).

Don't stress, totally fixable just call them.

Ah thank you so much. Didn't realise it was set to auto renew, I will definitely check that this time.

Trying to call them now to cancel.

They should've sent your renewal quote about a month in advance

I did the same last year. Completely forgot. I just did the online chat thing and they cancelled the renewed policy, no issues.

I think if you realise pretty quickly, not 4 months down the line it's ok.

thanks again, called up and they offered me a price £5 lower than the cheapest quote. So I've now saved £155 - result!

Very relieved now :)
