If you have workmen in your house/garden, what time do they turn up?

We are having some work done and they don't turn up until around 9.30 - not paying them by the day so doesn't really matter but just curious if this is the norm?

Have had bricklayers and electricians turn up at 8. Plasterers turned up at 9.

PlanDeRaccordement · 28/09/2021 10:27

Usually 8am here. But they take a long lunch.

MayEye · 28/09/2021 10:29

Today it was 9.15 ish - never before 9

Caspianberg · 28/09/2021 10:31

7.30am. Sometimes even 6.45/7am.

Especially in winter when it’s dark by 4pm they want to be able to get a full days work in ie 8hrs.

LBOCS2 · 28/09/2021 10:32

Usually between 7.30 and 8.30.

BonnyandPoppy · 28/09/2021 10:37

We have builders at the moment and they usually turn up about 7:30

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 10:50

We had builders in last week and they were here by 8.30 every day.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/09/2021 11:48

Builders 8am, my decorator about 7.30am (but that’s because he lives across the road). Unless they have materials to collect on the way. But they all like to finish at about 4pm (none of them have a lunch break) which is fine by me. They stay later if there’s something that definitely needs finishing that day though.

TooWicked · 28/09/2021 11:49

8am today (plasterer).

dun1urkin · 28/09/2021 12:02

Anytime between 8 and around 9:30 here.
To be honest if it’s been later than 9 I’ve usually been told why, either school run or going to a supplier first have been the reasons on the whole. Doesn’t seem to be trade specific.

(Plumbers, electricians, plasterers, decorators, window fitters and carpet fitters over the last 6 months. I’m soooo ready to be finished Grin)

stormelf · 28/09/2021 12:08

Usually around 9 (I don't get back from school run until 9.10 so they probably would be here a bit earlier if I was here). If they need to arrive earlier they let me know, had few days when it's been 8am starts. Different trades (plumbers, plasterers, electricians, tilers etc) but from same construction company

Oh god, some of these 7.30am ones are making me 😳. Our builders start on Monday and every room is being done ( subsidence). Got 3 kids to get ready for school! Although they will have to be either earlier then 8.15 or after 9 due to school run. Im Going to have to be organised!

StandardPoodle · 28/09/2021 17:53

Tilers - 8am.

Scarby9 · 28/09/2021 18:01

I met the builder's forum every weekday between 7 and 7.15am for almost 6 weeks when I was having major building work done.
I left for work at 7.15- 7.30 and they didn't start anything noisy until 8am, but they ate breakfast, cleaned round and got everything ready for the day ahead.
They were fabulous builders and my house was almost cleaner during the building work than without!

jaundicedoutlook · 28/09/2021 18:10

We’ve had lots of tradesmen over the last 12 months doing multi-day work. As a rule I’d say 8 is the average. If you’re living on site I think it is fair enough to ask them their expected arrival time and if there are obstacles, eg school run, then either give them a key (if trustworthy) or ask them to come before you set off.

GiantKitten · 28/09/2021 18:21

Have had hard landscapers in the last month - they’ve generally started around 9 and finished at 2.30-3.
They are paid by the day, but were often limited waiting for stuff to “go off” or deliveries not arriving when promised, and they’ve done a lovely job, so mustn’t grumble Smile
(They did mention that they used to start earlier but their hours were affected in lockdown, when people didn’t appreciate it, and they’ve adjusted permanently now)
Next door (terraced) had massive indoor works done last winter. They seemed to start earliest for the noisiest jobs Hmm including weekends sometimes Angry

Had our bathroom done and they were here everyday at 8am for 2 weeks. Cleaned up after themselves each day - our upstairs had never been hoovered as much as when they were here. I miss them.
