Letter from HMRC saying I owe them for tax credit overpayment

From 2013.

Had a letter this morning which appears to be the second they have sent as it talks about them writing to me previously. It says that from my award in 2012/2013 I owe them £750.

Am I able to ask them to show me the overpayment and details of how its been calculated? My Ex-H was self employed at that time and I dont have records of his earnings that year, and I would doubt that he does either after all that time. I wasnt working but claimed Carers Allowance.

If I owe it I will pay it back, but can I ask for a breakdown of what they say I owe and why?

Phone them up. We had a similar a few years ago, we did owe it, but they offered a repayment schedule so it didn't all have to be paid at once.

You can ask them for a breakdown. We did this but to be honest it didn't really clarify things for us. We set up a payment plan over two years to pay it back.

You can ask but I doubt you'll get anything intelligent back. When I rang tax credits and asked them to explain it they said its too complicated!

Make sure it checks out and isn't a scam or phishing letter.
