Cost of laying a hearth and fitting a fireplace

Sorry I know this should go in Property but it's an urgent enquiry.

Can anyone tell me how much it might cost to have a hearth laid and fireplace fitted? We have already bought the hearth and (decorative) fireplace, so it's just cost of labour and sand and cement.

We have someone coming tomorrow and they only sent their quote at 10pm tonight, and it's much, much more than we anticipated. Sad

They haven't exactly given you much time to shop around for a better quote, have they Confused how many days of work is it?

Icepinkeskimo · 28/09/2021 00:27

Your friendly QS Director here, estimated on one day 2 men max should be £700.00 including sand and cement. (This is also central London rates) I'm actually working tonight and just thought I'd check MN whilst having a cuppa and a ginger nut! It's the high life here 23 storeys up in the air.

What is worrying me as well is the last minute quotation and can do it tomorrow!! We are booked up on projects till Nov 2022, and any tradespersons of any standing are in the same position.

OP where did you find them? I hate people being ripped off, it's one of my biggest bugbears. If the quote it's massively higher than what I have advised you cancel immediately due to unforeseen circumstances. Feel free to DM me for any advice.

OP to be honest that is less than the going rate, I don't know how large your fire surround and Hearth is, and I am praying to god they mechanically tie the surround back to the wall if it's a hard material (stone, marble, granite).

I don't know this company so cannot comment.

We paid €280 just to have our fire back replaced last week (based in rural Ireland). Thats just one element of having a fireplace fitted. So I'm sure having the rest done with add 2-300 euro on top. But you can't scrimp. We once went for cheaper option and we're lucky we didn't all suffer carbon monoxide poisoning it was so badly fitted.

Our fitters had to remove and refit our stone fireplaces - found that they had originally not been tied on securely at all and were basically just being held to the wall by a little bit of plaster and sealant. Shock

Thanks for this - it turns out they had included other work in the estimate (there was no breakdown), so it turned out to be reasonable! After all that.... Confused I went to be before midnight then straight to work so didn't see these very helpful replies.

Nope - they apologised and said they'd been up the wall and forgot to send the quote.

They were booked in six weeks ago!

Funnily enough I called these guys as I wanted one of their fireplaces - sadly they don't deliver outside of London!
