What are work parties/events like?

My previous job I was at for years never had work parties/events, the closest thing was a box of cupcakes left in the staff room for someone's birthday...

I started a new job recently and they are having a party soon, it will be my first time meeting most of my colleagues in person. It's at a restaurant with a bar.

I'm really nervous and have no idea what to expect. I don't really drink alcohol but don't want to make a 'thing' about it.

They're all different, but basically you just have a drink at a bar and then a meal. People chat about work, mostly. If you don't drink, can you just say you're driving?

Where I work the young uns often go on to another bar or two and drink until the sun comes up. Old people like me just go home to bed after the meal.

Where I used to work it used to be the single people that stayed out until the early hours and the married people and those getting the last train home that left after the meal.

At DP's Company everyone leaves after the meal and they are all ages and backgrounds 🤷‍♀️

It also depends who is paying the bill. If the Company is paying the bar bill people tend to drink more and quicker than they would if they have to pay for themselves.
