Insuring brand new driver - licence details?

My son has his driving test soon.

I have just bought a new car and intend to transfer ownership of the old one and insure it with him as main driver as soon as he passes (yes he will be making a financial contribution to this!).

My question is - how do you get insurance quotes immediately after someone passes their test, since they won't have received their new full licence at that point? I'm guessing the driver number remains the same, and we just select "full UK licence" in the quote questionnaire, as he technically does hold one even though he won't physically have it?

Am i right about this? It's driving (ha ha) me mad, and I can't find the answer to this (stupid) question anywhere. Hoping someone might have done it recently?

Always assuming he does pass of course.....

Yep and just select under a month on the licence held question.

Thank you - I'm very grateful, that is so helpful! Been going round in circles!

Soryy, just to confirm - does the driver number stay the same?

That's the bit I couldn't decide so we chose an insurer who didn't ask Grin

just to warn you though, when ds did it, he said that if you applied for insurance to start now, it was much more expensive than if you could apply one month in advance.
We ended up with something convoluted so his car was insured to drive as soon as he passed.

I can't remember but we have 3 adult children, all of whom we insured on the day they passed with no hassle. I think you may be over-thinking it!

Yeah I thought this whole thing was a brilliant idea right up until I started looking at the insurance thing - the timings of getting and changing the various policies etc.!! Bloody nightmare.

Ds1 passed on Thursday. He was given a certificate with his licence number on it and gave them his provisional to send in. The number doesn’t change as it’s largely based on personal data.

I have been known to over-think things before! Grin
