What would you do if sent a duplicate order and not charged?

Order from a smallish company, but not single person etc and has quite a big social media presence. I’m pretty sure they’ve sent me a duplicate order and I’ve only been charged the once.
I couldn’t justify keeping the second lot of good for free, so emailed to let them know.
They’ve asked me to return them, fair enough, but at my own cost and they’ll only refund me when they relieve them. I’m a bit miffed that I could possibly be left out of pocket and they should arrange a pre paid Hermes collection or something? Or would you expect them to say thanks and give you a 10% discount for your next order or something? Would people have just not said anything and kept the extra stuff?

I wouldn't be out of pocket to send it back myself, it's their goods. They should collect.

MrsFlinch · 26/09/2021 17:22

No I wouldn’t be sending back unless they send a label Or a courier.

Got caught out with this with an eBay business. They sent the wrong size (also faulty) but I offered to keep it as could make use of it despite the fault. They insisted I send back at my cost and would send out correct item and refund postage once received back. I Received the correct item but no postage refund.

Now I tell them where it is and it’s up to them to collect or send a returns label.

I'd just put the order to one side, not touch it, and leave the ball in their court.
After a time period, if I heard nothing I'd assume they didn't want it back.

britnay · 26/09/2021 17:26

I had this happen and contacted the company. They thanked me for my honesty and said to keep the item.

From a smallish business I'd email and say happy to send back but they'd have to collect it. I had a double order from Amazon of dog food and kept that. It was their error too. Keep my dog fed until well after Xmas!

hayley013 · 26/09/2021 17:28

The same happened to me, a tiny packet of fizzy cola bottles were sent with my order in error, let them know and they were really snotty asking me to send back at my expense, so I ate them

simitra · 26/09/2021 17:36

Cost of return for goods which are incorrectly sent or faulty is down to the original seller - not the buyer. Had this a couple of times and quote the law at them then they email me a returns label.

Sleepyquest · 26/09/2021 17:41

I wouldn't have told them but maybe I'm an awful person Grin too much hassle. Even if they send a prepaid label, you have to sort out the courier and make sure you're in etc.

I ordered a garden decoration from a company a few years ago but they sent me the wrong item. I contacted them and they said they would collect it and they sent me a replacement. They didn't collect the unwanted item and after it being in my collection point for 3 weeks I put it in the shed.

A few weeks later I had a duplicate of the original order and contacted them and they picked that one up.

Over a year later I gave the unwanted item to a friend as a gift.

sittingonacornflake · 26/09/2021 17:48

@hayley013 that really made me laugh.

Erictheavocado · 26/09/2021 17:49

I would definitely NOT be returning at my expense. And I'd be keeping a careful eye on my bank account /credit card account to make sure they didn't try to charge me for it.

Why didn’t you give them the wrong item back when they came to collect the duplicate order ?
Wabola · 26/09/2021 17:56

Happened to me with an electrical item, I told them and they said keep it, it was worth about a tenner.

I also once received 10 large Christmas toadstool decorations from JL instead of one, I thought the box was big😂. I told them I didn't need the extra 9 and took them to local Waitrose to offload as that was easiest for me

TroysMammy · 26/09/2021 18:26

@viques The wrong item was a solar fountain and it was huge and heavy so too big to take to work for pick up. It was 4 weeks later they sent the duplicate wind spinners and I contacted them immediately hoping they wouldn't pick them up either and they were on the collection form and email. I didn't need a duplicate of the original order as I'd already had a replacement of the wind spinners.

I had this last week with Amazon. Ordered a pair of boots and they sent me two pairs by accident.

I contacted them and they told me to keep them. I suspect for big companies it's easier to just write it off.

For a small company I would do the same - but I would expect them to pay for a returns label or a courier. I wouldn't be going out of my way.

SquareYellow · 27/09/2021 16:03

Have replied saying I am happy for them to pay to arrange a collection, but I won’t pay for postage and be out of pocket for something that wasn’t my mistake.

chesirecat99 · 27/09/2021 16:17

It's their responsibility to pay for their return. They can't expect you to pay for their mistake.

You should write/email them and tell them that and give them a 14 day deadline to collect or send prepaid postage for the items or you will dispose of the goods.

SquareYellow · 29/09/2021 09:54

Thanks, I guess someone in the company must be on MN. I emailed back saying I was more than happy to return the extra items as long as they pre paid for the postage like Hermes. I would have said nothing if I was planning on keeping them to start with!
A different customer service person replied saying sorry for the confusion and to keep the duplicates.
