Car tax? When do I sell my car?

My ca's car tax runs out on 31st oct. I am selling it to DP, as I've got a new car. We both use both cars.

When do I sell it to him? 31st Oct? or 1st Nov? I think he will have to buy tax from the 1st of whatever month he buys it in, but I/we can't use the car after 31st Oct without tax, or without it being SORNed.

Am I overthinking this? Just sign over the V5 on 1st Nov? And leave him to buy new Tax from then? I think it can be done online?

You sell it when you want.

Any left over tax you can claim back, but only full months left. So if you sell in September, you can claim whole of October.
But if sell in October then can't claim for half a month.

Thanks Porfre, I can't be arsed claiming back any unpaid tax, so I said I'd sell it to him in Oct/Nov (whenever we get the best result). He's in no hurry as he's driving it anyway.

So - 31st Oct or 1st nov?

We sold 2 small cars and bought 1 big car on the 1st of the month. Rang up that day and got the full month back plus the other unused months, and also the new car didn't have any wasted days. It wasn't something I was expecting but it was a bit of a bonus.

I think my old car tax was £30 per year and my new one is about £20 so only would have amounted to pennies, although my other half's was £150ish so a bit more of a saving there 😊

Sell it to him on 1 November.

If you sell it to him in October, he'll have to tax it in October, so will lose most of a month, but if he taxes it on 1 November, it might technically be untaxed for a few hours at the beginning of the day, but it won't matter unless he drives it and gets caught by a police officer or camera.
