Crying in sleep as an adult

I woke up this morning crying which I've not done before. So strange! In my dream I was crying but didn't expect real tears in my eyes/on pillow when I woke. I was having a horrible dream involving a racist attack and the aftermath, so definitely a reason. Also, I've been pretty stressed recently.
Does anyone else ever do this? It's probably really common but I'm in my 50s and never done it.

It happens to me maybe once a year (I’m 31). Most recently I woke up crying during a dream about my grandad, who died a couple of years ago. I’ve been missing him a lot recently.

It’s always a weird feeling and not a nice way to start the day!

I had this once but I can’t remember the dream now maybe google it. My psychiatrist told me your dreams are just an extension of your conscious mind.

I’ve had dreams about people I love dying in which I’m sobbing. Not very often but they do happen.
I can’t remember that I wake up crying but definitely deeply sad and takes me a while to feel right again.

I had this after my dd died. I would wake up sobbing with tears running down my face, or sometimes DH would wake me up because I was crying in my sleep or shouting and screaming.
It happened for about a year then stopped. It was awful I hated going to bed because I knew it would happen.

I do every couple of years maybe, it's usually a dream about a relative dying (they are still alive, so I guess I'm just projecting my fears of what it will feel like when they do die).

IceLace100 · 25/09/2021 13:58

I think this is normal.

Really horrible though! Can you take some time to chill today?

I do this every couple of weeks or so but it's horrible Flowers

@ParkheadParadise - I'm so sorry you lost your DD. Life is incredibly cruel sometimes. Sending you Flowers.
Commiserations for those of you who have this regularly. Such an intense experience - I felt weirdly sad afterwards for at least a couple of hours. A big fry up helped though! 😋
