Do you wash trainers in the washing machine?

Any tips? I need to wash white Nike trainers.

I do wash them in the washing machine on a 900 spin but never wash any that have air in them like Nike Air or Air Max types. I once had to send a pair of my DS Air Max's back as a 'bubble' deflated and the first thing Nike asked on the phone was if they'd ever been machine washed (they hadn't) so I never have.

It depends - I'd do fabric ones in the washing machine (in a mesh bag) but not leather. For leather I'd do toothpaste and a very soft toothbrush

purplesequins · 25/09/2021 09:09

depends.
my running shoes are crusted in mud, they never get washed, that destroys the bounce.
the dc light coloured skechers sometimes go in if they look too muddy, they come out well, but the inner sole sometimes seperates out.
tbh I would just not buy white shoes with the expectation for them to stay white. that's unrealistic.

Yeah I do but only if they’re on their last legs anyway and I’m not too fussed if they get a bit ruined.

Depends. The only expensive trainers in our house are DH running ones and the shop adviced against the washing machine. So he is happy with discoloured trainers from running outside, the look is not impacting the shoe at all.

DD has "cheapish" adidas and NIke trainers for PE and as general wear shoes. These are known to have ended in the washing machine after a especially brutal muddy Scout trip. The school insists on white only. trainers so after the last year where they had to wear PE kit all day they ended up getting washed every. half term, they. still survive.

The mesh ones yes on a gentle wash.

But not leather ones.

Lonelycrab · 25/09/2021 09:19

Yes I do. Have a pair of AirMax 90s that have been machine washed several times. No problems yet. Usually put inside a pillowcase so they don’t clatter about too much.

WarOfAttrition · 25/09/2021 09:24

Yes I do.
A few months ago I went for a walk in the park and came back with my (white Nike, leather and nylon) trainers covered in mud. My washing machine has a sport shoes programme, so I chucked them in. They were absolutely fine, nice and white again. We had sunny weather at the time, so I put them out in the garden to dry off. Last week when I washed them, I dried them in the airing cupboard.

Dunrovi · 25/09/2021 09:25

As a last resort only.
I find it often detaches the sole lining even if the rest of the shoe comes out ok.

SummerintheCity2021 · 25/09/2021 10:23

Do you use detergent or just water?

I use my normal detergent but not conditioner.

Here’s a pic of my 5yr old trainers that have been through the washing machine a few times. They’re currently a bit grubby because I’ve been wearing them since their last wash.

Fashion ones yes, running ones never! They cost too much and I'm worried it will ruin them

Kitkat151 · 25/09/2021 13:42

Yes......trainers...Wellies....walking boots....they all go in the washing machine

willrufford · 25/09/2021 14:38

I can understand about the Air ones. But how about the ones with Gel soles?

Resilience · 25/09/2021 16:42

Last time I washed a pair of DDs trainers, I chucked them in with a load of whites and melted them. Blush She was not happy!

Now I just make everyone responsible for their own footwear cleanliness.

Mine might get a rinse under the tap.

SummerintheCity2021 · 25/09/2021 17:52

Well I washed them on a quick 30 degree wash and they have come out fine (so far, not dried yet.)

Yes, all the time! Detergent plus a scoop of vanish gold or even better a scoop of Napisan when I have any
