Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

No. The gauge is just above the red area but one of the petrol stations in our local town is privately owned and has it's own tankers and drivers who collect their own fuel from the oil refinery at Stanlow. They have put out a Facebook post saying there will be no fuel shortage at their PF station. They are also the cheapest PFS in the area.

Spottyphonecase24 · 24/09/2021 17:09

I filled the tank this morning on the way to work as I was on the red and have a long journey tomorrow. I left 20 minutes early thinking it would be mayhem. One pump out of 6 was closed. There was only me and another person getting fuel. The lady at the till told me it was quiet (7.30am) by 9.15 they had put a post on Facebook saying they had run out of fuel.

AbstractEim · 24/09/2021 17:12

Petrol light came on a few days ago and I’ve kept forgetting to get petrol (when there was no queue) massive queues today and I couldn’t put it off. I only ever fill up when I’m on red but there were so many people paying for small amounts when I went to pay. Think it’s ridiculous.

MackenCheese · 24/09/2021 17:13

My tank is empty, and I'm STILL debating whether to fill up tonight! Don't want to sit in a queue....

nancy75 · 24/09/2021 17:13

I queued for 20 minutes but was in the red & only had 10 miles left so did need to put petrol in (or break down in the way home) I normally only put 20 quid in but I did fill the tank today - hopefully that will last until this is over

OldTurtleNewShell · 24/09/2021 17:14

I filled up but only because I was almost on empty and had a two hour drive ahead, otherwise I'd not have bothered. I wish I'd known it was going to be like this. I'd have filled up yesterday. It was chaos.

nancy75 · 24/09/2021 17:14

I did have to try 3 petrol stations as the big ones near me had all run out (10.30 this morning)

AbstractEim · 24/09/2021 17:14

Also, while I was queuing someone phoned to check if there was petrol, I could hear as phone was on speaker, guy behind till said there’s massive queues but no shortages at all where we are, he didn’t understand it.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/09/2021 17:15

I had 1/4 tank this morning and need more than that for a long trip this weekend. I would usually have filled up this evening or in the morning, but instead I did it straight after the school run. Things were fine then but huge queues have formed as the day has gone on.

Greenhand · 24/09/2021 17:16

I need to fill up weekly for school runs (state school no bus as house too rural) and activities plus weekly hospital appointments.
I have enough to get to Wednesday. If I can't get any by then, no school for the kids, no hospital appointments etc.

I've read a lot of people justifying their panic buying on here and my reasons would be no better.

Local FB page has several reports of ambulances not able to get fuel.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 24/09/2021 17:16

I will tomorrow when I go out but I have a 400 mile round trip coming up soon that I have to make so need 3/4 of a tank for that. Currently got just under half a tank.

SpikeyFloof · 24/09/2021 17:17

I need air earlier so jumped the queue as I wasn't going anywhere near the fuel pumps. So many cars beeped at me and a man started shouting from his window!

Wroxie · 24/09/2021 17:18

I live in Leeds and went to visit a friend in Bradford today - once I passed through Calverley (village between Leeds and Bradford) every petrol station had queues out into the road. I was going to stop off at the Sainsbury's one on the way home (for a normal fill-up, not hoarding anything) but a guy was out in high-vis directing traffic and he was shouting it was a 45 minute wait!

No issue in Leeds, at least not North Leeds where I live. I got my own petrol at the Kirkstall Morrison's just now and I only had to wait for one car ahead of me. The Texaco closer to my house didn't have a queue when I passed, either.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 24/09/2021 17:19

Yes. In a “if you can’t beat ‘em then join em” moment.
I could have taken the high ground but all 3 of our vehicles had very little fuel in them…we are of the run them around with just a tenner in ilk. If I run out I can just about get to work but the school run would be a mare. My husband runs out and he can’t open his shop and therefore no income!

matthancockslovechild · 24/09/2021 17:21

No. I've got 40 miles in the tank, but no plans to go anywhere so I'll wait until normality returns.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 24/09/2021 17:21

I normally fill up on a Friday on my way home from work…so I don’t have to on Monday!!

Popped by to the local Sainsbury’s and they had 2 pumps left with fuel, took me 20 minutes to get in.

If I didn’t have 63 miles and not needed the car this weekend I would have left it till next week, annoyingly we are going out Sunday so needed it.

Parker231 · 24/09/2021 17:22

Filled up today as we’re driving to the Netherlands tomorrow. Wish I’d done it earlier as there was a 45 minute queue and the traffic was a nightmare.

Roominmyhouse · 24/09/2021 17:30

I’ve got 100 miles left but a much longer journey to do tonight and tomorrow. So will have to try and fill up somewhere before we leave tonight. Absolutely dreading it!

knittingaddict · 24/09/2021 17:31

No, but I'm having to make an effort not to. I don't want to be part of the problem.

Giggorata · 24/09/2021 17:36

I promised to help some friends move some stuff in my van tomorrow, which will empty my tank.
I hope I can get some more fuel to get to the wedding I’m officiating at next Tuesday 🤞

dementedma · 24/09/2021 17:39

No. Got less than half a tank which will do me two days if I go to work. Will probably work from home until things calm down.

JustThisLastLittleBit · 24/09/2021 17:49

Nope. Wfh, live next door to pub and supermarket. Only keep the car so I can get to my dad or my adult DC in an emergency

Octopie · 24/09/2021 17:50

@99victoria

Fucking furious! I was at my daughter's and low on petrol but there are 2 petrol stations on the 40 minute drive from hers to mine so had planned to fill up at one of them. Both had queues going out into the road (about 20 cars? where normally you just drive straight in and fill up). Because i was so low on petrol I couldn't risk queuing for half an hour and running out of petrol in the queue only for the petrol station to suddenly declare they have run out (like our local one did this morning, hence I wasn't able to fill up before I went) so in the end I just had to go for it and keep my fingers crossed.

Got home on fumes I think. I don't think I've even got enough petrol now to get to my nearest petrol station! Honestly, it was all i could do to stop myself getting out of the car and going up to people ahead of me in the queue and asking if they really NEEDED petrol, because I did and they were stopping me getting any.

People are so fucking self-centred!

Maybe they did, lots of people I know are so used to being able to pop by and get fuel when needed that they often wait until the warning light is on. Same as you evidently did...
Ezydoesit · 24/09/2021 17:53

No. Going to wait for it to all blow over.

SirChenjins · 24/09/2021 17:56

I normally fill up on a Friday or Saturday for the weekend and then the commute on Monday - long queues here but it was fine, there was plenty of petrol. Just really annoying that people are panic buying. If it continues I’ll have to look at getting the team working at home f/t until it settles down.
