Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

I filled up early yesterday morning as I was getting low. I didn't realise that there was going to be an issue.

I was planning on driving on the motorway tomorrow, which is a HUGE deal for me as I haven't even though I passed my driving test two years ago. I need to use the motorway in a few weeks time, and I wanted a practice run. I daren't use the petrol. The school run is 160 miles a week, so I need to save it for that.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/09/2021 16:46

Ish. Just under a quarter left, hour.thirty of driving to do today, hour to do on Sunday and I’m very pregnant so hospital run at any minute. I might have pushed things to Sun but filled up today.

Adm1010 · 24/09/2021 16:47

I’ve filled up today instead of tomorrow . I have a long drive to take my son back to uni this weekend so I needed it for that .

I’m guessing that the majority of people have their reasons for needing to fill up and are worried about not being able to . I think the majority are probably not “ selfish arseholes “

Flaunch · 24/09/2021 16:48

Yea but only because I’m going out tomorrow and Sunday. I would otherwise got it in the morning but didn’t want to find there was no fuel left then as I’ve made plans I want to keep.

icedcoffees · 24/09/2021 16:51

No, I filled up last Friday and still have 3/4 of a tank.

But our local petrol station was absolutely heaving all day. I drive around town for work and every time I drove past it seemed to be getting worse!

CynsterBitch · 24/09/2021 16:52

My fuel light came on last night and I thought I’d leave it till today, that was a stupid decision. Just finished work now (WFH day) and trying to figure out where there might be petrol

WaterAndRichTea · 24/09/2021 16:52

We have 3 garages in our area and has been mad Q’s everywhere….

Our Sainsburys garage has now Sold out completely!

And people are starting to panic buy again too

We only got petrol last week so didnt go today

Livelovebehappy · 24/09/2021 16:53

It’s a case of having to be a sheep, because most other people are buying up the petrol, so you have no choice but to join them. Either that, or risk not being able to get to work next week.

BunsyGirl · 24/09/2021 16:53

No because the garages have run out in my area. I’m on the red light and won’t be able to take my children to school or go to work next week at this rate. So many selfish wankers in this World.

Teenagers2grownups0 · 24/09/2021 16:54

Got half a tank today which may have waited until Sunday but DH is using the car for a journey that will take a full tank over the next couple of days.

We queued for about ten minutes and prices were mad (we did not realise until after filling up as the display was blank, should have realised then really!). There was no normal diesel so we had to get V-Power diesel which was being charged at.....157.9p/litre Shock

vickyc90 · 24/09/2021 16:54

Yes but couldn't be bothered with waiting after 30 minutes came out, went to the local motorway service station extra £4 but was relatively empty

Unsure33 · 24/09/2021 16:56

The ironic thing is , there is no shortage of fuel . So people were told NOT to panic . So what do they do ? Panic.

It’s ridiculous.

Nothingoriginalhere · 24/09/2021 16:56

I filled up today as was almost on red, have a 56 mile round trip for work. Mon-Friday and tomorrow am working all day for a covid service and will have to deliver pulse ox packs over a large radius ie 1 place is an hours drive and could need to go an hour in opposite direction so yes I needed to fill up today.
I normally fill up 1 1/2 times per week.

Loubiemoo · 24/09/2021 16:57

I have enough left for two or three days. I live in the countryside and need my car to get to work as a nurse. No public transport here. Hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Tiramiwho · 24/09/2021 16:57

My Tesco Extra has high Viz officials stationed outside ( stopping cars on the very busy Zebra crossingAngry ) advising them they have plenty and no need to panic. Cars were overtaking on the crossing to get into the station unaccosted, causing danger to people actually crossing Sad

99victoria · 24/09/2021 16:58

@MadMadMadamMim
Well, for a start, quite a large number of people on this thread have admitted that they didn't need petrol but filled up anyway. So, on balance, unlikely that the 20 or so cars in front of me were all desperate

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 24/09/2021 16:59

Yes, I topped up my half empty tank to full, as need to take my son to Uni with all his stuff on Monday, and half a tank would not get me there and back

Do yes, I panic- bought as normally would have waited until Sunday to top up

Lots of friends ranting about people like me on social media now

kittykarate · 24/09/2021 16:59

I was on the red light and am planning a 250 mile trip tomorrow, so filled up today. So not on my 'normal' day, but I did need to do it!

It was absolutely nuts at lunchtime at Sainsbury's at Cheadle Royal - they had closed the right turn into the petrol station, and it was queued back almost to the store with a mix of people queuing for the petrol and people trying to get past them to get out of the car park. I had to sneak out the back gate near John Lewis' collections.

At the same time, my local petrol station had a small queue, but that was caused by petrol pump princesses queuing for the pumps that were on their petrol cap side, blocking people from getting to the others.

godmum56 · 24/09/2021 17:01

nope

megletthesecond · 24/09/2021 17:01

No. I filled up about a month ago but I'm down to 40 miles and did want to do it today. We can't go out out this weekend if I can't fill up.

Silkiescatz · 24/09/2021 17:02

No but we have half a tank left, live rurally but school is walking distance and wfh. Did warn DH though as he normally waits for the red light then he ignores it drives around for miles then immediately needs a petrol station.

googdoo · 24/09/2021 17:04

Had 3 bars left- approx 80 miles. Use the car daily for school runs- school about 7 miles each way and for work. I would have probably filled up over the weekend. Decided to fill up today as where I live the queues for petrol are about 40 long. Would have probably put £20/£30 in but just filled up- so about £50. I was too nervous not to as 3 petrol stations near me have already closed. It's okay to say don't panic but but DD is disabled and can't rely on public transport and just started a new job which involves driving.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 24/09/2021 17:05

I have half a tank so didn't, will top up on payday on Thursday like I normally do, if there's any left!

whatistheworld · 24/09/2021 17:06

i had been meaning to get some all week and only had 60 miles left on the display (so almost on petrol light) so filled up today. would normally get £45 but got £60. partly because i queued up for so long

DoraMaude · 24/09/2021 17:07

I do judge people who have filled up when they don't need to (like my elderly neighbours who rarely use their cars). In doing so they may be depriving people who really need it from getting fuel, for essential journeys, getting to work etc. It's selfish.
