Any dentists? Tooth question

I've been to the dentist today and had a root removed. I had the tooth it was attached to taken out years ago but today he took out the root as he said it was infected. It took a lot of pulling to get out and I'm in a lot of pain.

My question is - have the nerves been removed too now that the root has? And if so why can I still feel pain?

And secondly can you still get dry socket if you have no root?

I am meant to be doing a half marathon on Sunday but if it will mess with the clotting maybe I shouldn't.

Now the root has gone, there won't be a nerve there now. Just a gap in the bone that is filled with a blood clot. That's the bit that will be sore and bruised. Take painkillers, have a soft diet and try not to mess with it. Don't smoke, that's the worst for a dry socket.

You'll probably be ok for Sunday, are you resting from now till then?

You can still feel pain because there’s nerves in the bone and gum surrounding the socket.

A dry socket is where the blood clot is prematurely lost from the socket leaving exposed bone (you can also get infected sockets which a lot of people, especially it seems on mumsnet, mistake for a dry socket)
