Horse hooves in the night

I've just woken up to the sound of horse hooves, can't tell if they were on the main road at front or the flat estate at the back. Who rides their horse at midnight?
Death? Ghost?

Perhaps it’s just a man with two coconut halves.

Thecomfortador · 23/09/2021 01:01

Whenever the moon and stars are set, whenever the wind is high, all night long in the dark and wet, a man goes riding by. Late in the night when the fires are out, why does he gallop and gallop about?

Robert Louis Stevenson had the same question.

Thecomfortador · 23/09/2021 01:04

Verse 2: whenever the trees are crying aloud, and the ships are tossed at sea, by on the highway, low and loud, by at the gallop goes he. By at the gallop he goes and then, by he comes back, at the gallop again.

Literally the only poem I know, so you may as well have it all.

Someone’s horse has got loose and is having a little gallop.

Theblackdogagain · 23/09/2021 01:08

I'm loving the coconut shells, bought by an African swallow?
The poem is great but creepy, thanks.

It could be the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Although they are a little late to the party.

Love the poem. It reminds me of a poem I read as a child about a highway man but I can't for the life of me recall it.

I built a ship upon the stairs

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:02

You told me I was going to lose the fight 🎶🎵

hilariousnamehere · 23/09/2021 02:04

Me Grin my horse was gorgeous but also a dickhead and couldn't cope with the bustle of daytime so we went out very very early and occasionally very very late.

... he is no longer with us though so maybe it really was him?!

JaneJeffer · 23/09/2021 02:04

@Cwtchycoopark it's this allpoetry.com/poem/8497229-The-Highwayman-by-Alfred-Noyes

JaneJeffer · 23/09/2021 02:06

Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!
😰

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:10

@JaneJeffer great stuff. It's also the story in the Fleetwood Mac video 'Everywhere'.

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:12
JaneJeffer · 23/09/2021 02:14

Oh yes I remember that. Gotta love an 80's video! We did the poem at school.

Theblackdogagain · 23/09/2021 02:14

I love the highwayman poem, I know it from Anne of green gables.
Reminds me of moonlight shadow by Mike Old field.
So it's either a ghost horse, a ghost rider or an escaped horse.

The ten o' clock horses!

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:16

Yes. Well that or Lindsey Buckingham.

hilariousnamehere · 23/09/2021 02:17

Escaped ghost horse?! I think I like the coconut shells explanation best 😂

JaneJeffer · 23/09/2021 02:18

I'll tell you what else is spooky @MeAndDebbieMcGee your video post still says 'just now' Shock

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:19

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 23/09/2021 02:21
