Tonight I am going to a Japanese restaurant for the first time.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I should order?

Yakitori is v tasty, and easy for Western palate to transition to.

Doubleraspberry · 22/09/2021 17:18

This might sound silly but do you know what sort of Japanese restaurant it is? Some have almost entirely sushi, others a wider selection including meat and fish mains, some specialise in rice and noodle dishes with only a bit of sushi etc.

Raman
Katsu
Gyoza
Teriyaki

Go online to the restaurant website and go through the menu in advance. See what looks good to you.

Order everyything!!!

Eel/unagi any way they do it; in sushi or donburi/rice bowl. It's filleted so no bones and in a kind of sticky bbq-ish sauce -its the best!

Any spinach side dish with sesame dressing
Takoyaki - octopus chunk inside a fried dough with mayo.
Sweet potato croquettes
Pickles/tsukimono

In terms of sushi I like nigiri mostly so just a single piece if fish on a lozenge of rice.

My absolute favourite is uni/urchin and I like mackerel too which is cooked and vinegared. Roe is good; salmon roe. Not so keen on flying fish roe/tobiko.

Have ice-cream mochi for pud if they have it.

Enjoy! I love japanese food

Mmmmmm....Japanese food

Depending on the type of Japanese resto...

sushi platter - if youre a sushi virgin
pork tonkotsu/katsu - always a solid bet
okonomiyaki - pancake and one of my favs in japan!
yakitori skewers - grilled meat
matsusaka/kobe/wagyu beef - if you're going big
tonkotsu (prok bone broth) ramen - soupy noodles
tsukemeno - side disj of pickles - love em!

in short, its all good!

MummyJ12 · 22/09/2021 17:26

One or more of these:
Ebi tempura (lightly fried tiger prawns)
Gyoza
Chicken Yakitori
Dragon roll or sushi platter
Salmon sashimi
A bento box with chicken teriyaki or salmon teriyaki would be a good option if you’ve not tried the cuisine before. (You get a little bit of salad, rice, sushi, as well as the teriyaki and then usually a bowl of miso soup on the side)
Enjoy! I love Japanese food 💗

wizzler · 22/09/2021 17:38

Thanks everyone. @Doubleraspberry I've had a scooch through the menu and it seems to have a fair selection including sushi, rice and noodle dishes
I said I would treat my teenage dc to a meal out providing that they could agree with each other and it wasnt KFC. This is what they have chosen!

I feel very much out of my comfort zone but reassured by the wisdom of Mn

Enjoy. Japanese food is so lovely. The only things that could be really unnerving might be octopus if you've not had it before - the tentacles are quite tentacley - and raw fish of course if you don't fancy it. Otherwise it's grilled/fried meat/fish/vegetables, noodles and rice!

thehairyhog · 22/09/2021 17:54

Katsu with Japanese curry sauce 😋

wizzler · 22/09/2021 18:03

I will report back!

Chicken Katsu curry is a crowd pleaser, nearly everyone likes it I find

Hummingbirdcake · 22/09/2021 18:11

I want some tempura now!

IfImLyingImDying · 22/09/2021 18:19

It’s a good choice @wizzler. Japanese food is so much fun and there’s almost certainly going to be something you like on the menu.

Kezzie200 · 22/09/2021 18:23

I love bao buns, dim sum, sushi with tuna or salmon, the tofu pockets (not sure of their name).

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 22/09/2021 18:24

Second bento box. You can try a few bits that way.

Yum. I am jealous!

Let's know how you get on. I always feel very nourished after a good Japanese meal.

Warm sake is good too.

NoYOUbekind · 22/09/2021 18:25

Tell your waiter it's your first time - they'll probably have a few ideas that aren't too scary. If they have miso aubergine then get it!

Inari.

Lovely, lovely Japanese food. The most 'western-like' would be chicken yakitori (pretty much barbeque chicken with soy, rather than being tomatoey), pork tonkatsu/chicken katsu (piece of meat in breadcrumbs, either with barbeque sauce for the pork or curry sauce for the chicken) or Niku dango (meatballs).

I could just go for some vegetable tempura (even better than ebi) and about ten other things at the moment.

NiceGerbil · 22/09/2021 18:45

Something like noodles with some kind of teriyaki meat is v nice and not too alien iyswim

Have a great time!

Do you kids know what they want? They may have all the info already!

FinallyHere · 22/09/2021 18:52

Another vote for a bento box

It is very likely to be very good quality food and absolutely delicious. DC have great taste. Enjoy.

OhWhyNot · 22/09/2021 19:30

I like katsu

Tastes like homepride korma sauce Grin

Teriyaki is very sweet (I find a lot of Japanese food quite sweet)

Grilled chicken with soya sauce is good

wizzler · 23/09/2021 08:53

Thanks everyone. We went to Tsuki in Sheffield, ordering was simple as they gave us a tablet with all the info on which DS took charge of. I tried udon, yakitiri, Kai I beef, tuna sashimi and liked most of them. The Dc really enjoyed it and seemed to base their orders on what they had seen in anime!
I think it must be freshers week as there was a lot of very drunk people dressed strangely ( men dressed as ballerinas etc). DD's eyes were like saucers after so long in lockdown!

Glad u enjoyed your meal!

Tsuki is a weird name for the restaurant, it means to stab something!

It’s a nice name it means moon
happysunr1se · 23/09/2021 12:44

It means moon aswell?

Yes that's much better!

I used to do Iaido, so tsuki was a word used regularly with the thrust/stab meaning. For eg. Morote tsuki = 2 handed thrust
