A true story film I can watch tonight

I have Prime or Netflix.

I'm finding lately that I don't have patience with nonsense films, but I do enjoy something based on a true story.

Recent favourites are Pride, A Call to Spy and the Freddie Mercury one.

Any recommendations?

Smoke & Mirrors is on Netflix and is (unbelievably!) a true story - I really enjoyed it (Spanish film)

My Octopus teacher definitely deserved the Oscar!

I don’t know if it’s available on your platforms, but The Fencer is very good. It’s a Finnish film.

iklboo · 20/09/2021 22:10

Resistance - the true story of Marcel Marceau in WW2.

Ninkanink · 20/09/2021 22:26

Actually, The Fencer might be a Finnish/Estonian collaboration.

Bit late for this evening, another vote for Lion. I love Dev Patel.

But have your seen Nomadland? It's not a true story but there are real people in it. It's fantastic and very far from nonsense.

On the Basis of Sex about Ruth Bader-Ginsberg is very good and gives an insight into her early years and feminism in the US.

Hacksaw ridge if you don't mind war stuff
I'm not generally a war films person but it was outstanding (if bloody)

I'll echo posters who recommended:

"Schumacher"
"The Big Short"
"Spotlight"
"Worth"

I'll add:

"The Courier" with Benedict Cumberbatch
"The Railway Man" with Colin Firth
"Julie and Julia" with Meryl Streep and more lighthearted

So many great films already mentioned on here.

There's also

Schindler's List
Papillon (I've only seen the original)
The Mauritanian
The Great Escape
Silkwood

All based on true stories.

SuperStarRose · 21/09/2021 01:39

And you must all watch

The Stanford Prison Experiment

Based on a true story

And

Starfish

SuperStarRose · 21/09/2021 01:43

I haven't seen Hidden Figures so that's now top of my to see list. It's currently on Disney + but not Amazon or Netflix

SuperStarRose · 21/09/2021 01:45

Oh but not till Oct 8th
