Anyone else with People's Energy?

Hello,

Just wondering whether anyone else is with People's Energy. I know they are now bust. Worried as we have about £300 ish with them and I can't now download any proof of this. I woudl like to switch suppliers as I am concerned that once we have a new supplier, there will be less choice and things will be more expensive. The advice is not to change though. I truly had no clue this was on the cards, must be an absolute nightmare for the staff. What are others doing?

Not with People's Energy but Utility Point which is the other company that's gone bust. We're just sitting tight, as advised. Ofgem say our credit is protected and I don't want to jeopardise that by messing around. Ofgem's website say we're being switched to EDF, not sure about People's Energy though. I think we're just going to have to accept an increase in price, unfortunately. We can always switch once it's sorted out, but I feel it may be better to stick with one of the bigger companies as I've recently read that experts are predicting that there'll only be around 10 energy suppliers by 2022.

Hi I was with People’s Energy. I work in the electricity distribution industry and any credit you have will be transferred to your new account with the supplier that Ofgem appoint. I know it’s tempting to switch now with all the press about rising gas and electricity prices but if you do switch now there is a v small risk to your supply and also it makes things more tricky to get the outstanding credit moved over to your new supplier. I would suggest you sit tight until the new supplier is appointed and then switch if you need to.

I have about £100 with people's energy, but did an online switch to Sainsburys on Saturday as they habd a 2 year deal available... I thought losing the £100 was worth it if I can get on a fix before the prices go any higher. Not saying that's the right course of action though.

We are. Have about £450 in credit so am sitting tight...

goingpearshaped · 20/09/2021 11:00

Thanks all. I think sitting right is the best option for us too, just that little nagging doubt. Very sorry others are in the same situation. It's such a mess. Huge job losses I imagine which is awful.

Flowers for the replies, I am grateful.

The advise is not to switch, wait to be moved over first. This will prevent issues with supply and losing credits.

seven201 · 20/09/2021 11:08

We're with peoples energy but through switch-craft. The email a few days ago said a new supplier hadn't been found yet but we'd automatically be switched then and to not switch somewhere ourselves yet as it would confuse things.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/09/2021 11:10

We are with Peoples Energy too.

Can't remember but the last company's name we were with, but it also went bust last year and we were moved to one of the big ones. Took about 3 weeks and the credit we had did reappear. So not should be fine.

Then we moved to Peoples Energy! 😩😁

Lifeisshortandbittersweet · 20/09/2021 11:10

I'm in the same boat too, was with pfp energy, they went bust and I was told British gas was taking over, so to wait until I had a customer number from then and they had taken it on, then I could switch for free an any credit I had would be moved over to any new provider.
I'm waiting for that, as I was worried changing it to another too soon may cause an issue with supply x

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/09/2021 11:11

Oh my god - my post made no sense. Sorry!

This happened to us last year and it was all fine - our credit moved to the newly assigned company (one of the big players).

We then subsequently moved to peoples energy. Clearly we are cursed! 😁

DadDadDad · 20/09/2021 11:13

I don't think you need to worry. I'm with People's Energy. This is the second time this has happened to me (previous energy supplier folded), and the regulator just steps in to make sure you are transferred, including any balance with your existing supplier.

I would wait for the transfer and once it's all sorted (might take a while), then you can switch again if there's a cheaper deal.

ziggyf · 20/09/2021 11:14

We're in debit with people's energy - does anyone know whether that will be carried over too? I presume so but it would be very welcome if not!

DadDadDad · 20/09/2021 11:18

Interesting to hear I'm not the only one: @HavfrueDenizKisi - I was with Tonik, they went bust, got moved to Scottish Power (around this time last year).

Basically, I just go where Martin Lewis's Energy Club tells me!

goingpearshaped · 20/09/2021 11:25

@DadDadDad, me too, this is how I am with PE! Sorry a couple of you have been bumped twice. Onwards...

Just seen peoples energy is being transferred to British Gas. It's happened to me before too, just have to wait until it's all transferred and sorted before switching yourself.

Pebble21uk · 20/09/2021 20:44

Does anyone know what we do about direct debits? I've had an email saying we were transferred to British Gas yesterday (19th) but my DD to People's Energy has still gone out of my account today! Not happy as I already have several hundred credit with them!

goingpearshaped · 20/09/2021 20:54

Ah sorry @Pebble21uk, I don't kow. ours will go out at the start of the month. hopefully a bit clearer in the next few days as BG get sorted.

I'm with Peoples Energy.
I've just received a text from British Gas saying they will be my new provider.

Interestingly on BBC news earlier we were advised to take pictures of gas and electric meters as soon as possible. This is to ensure we have a log of the transfer data/usage - just to ensure the switch information is correct.

Like other posters I'm around £300 in credit with Peoples Energy but I'm confident OFCOM will tf this credit balance to my new provider AKA British Gas.

TractorAndHeadphones · 20/09/2021 22:03

Also was with people’s energy - and have an outstanding meter read dispute. Anybody else in the same?

DadDadDad · 01/10/2021 22:05

How's it going, my fellow People's Energy refugees? BG emailed to say we should enter meter readings on the PE website. Site was a bit slow but I was able to do this, and download my last bill showing I'm massively in credit - so at some point I can check that BG have carried over that credit.

Money Saving Expert also emailed (I'm signed up to their great Energy Club) which said they would now record me as being on BG's tariff. They echoed what we've all heard: bills are going up everywhere so there's not much prospect of switching somewhere cheaper at the moment.
