Are you in Devon/ Cornwall? How do you pronounce Launceston?

Genuinely interested.

I grew up with a very definite way from my mum and her sister, and subsequently, born '31, 33 and '45; but I don't hear it pronounced that way anymore.

How would you pronounce it (phonetically)?

CornishTiger · 19/09/2021 22:30

ProfessorPeach · 19/09/2021 22:30

I think the Cornish way is Lan-sun but I’d say Lawn-ston.

flatpack1 · 19/09/2021 22:30

Yep Lawnstun

TimTheEnchantress · 19/09/2021 22:30

I grew up down that way - I remember it being called Lanson.

CornishTiger · 19/09/2021 22:30

If you are listening to certain radio stations it a different way

CarelessSquid07A · 19/09/2021 22:30

Cornish DP says Lawn-ston.
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 19/09/2021 22:32

Lawnston or actually more like Laaaunston but we are incomers! Have heard Lansen from a man in his 80s.

Sideorderofchips · 19/09/2021 22:33

Lawnston

I passed my driving test there 😂

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/09/2021 22:33

My Cornish maid mate calls St Austell Snozzle so Lan Sun is quite probable, to me!

Welldarn · 19/09/2021 22:35

Definitely Lawnston in Devon. Now if someone could tell me how to pronounce Beaminster? The choice seems to be between Beeminster or Bem minster. 😆

Fenelladepompom · 19/09/2021 22:36

Lonsn. But the o is a cross between o and ah.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 19/09/2021 22:39

I’m from Snozzle-way, and Launce’n or Lance’n was standard when i was growing up - no “t” pronounced.

carlywurly · 19/09/2021 22:47

I've been told Larnson is correct by those who live there.

I do tend to revert to lawnston though.

Tiggles · 19/09/2021 22:53

My family live there.
I say Lan-son

But the lan part is in a cornish accent and I'm not sure how to write it!

WildFlowerBees · 19/09/2021 22:58

Lansun if you're Cornish, Lawnston if not though I did hear a lady call it Lawn ces ton once Grin

PinkFootstool · 19/09/2021 22:58

Lanson.

I live locally and say Bem-minster
NewlyGranny · 19/09/2021 23:03

Lawn-stun, but true Cornish folk say Lahns'n. The other one in Tasmania is Lawn-sess-tun.

BridgetInHerBravery · 19/09/2021 23:05

Larnsuhn

Snozzlemaid · 19/09/2021 23:06

It's Lawnston but if you're local to that area it's known as Lansun.

CoronaPeroni · 19/09/2021 23:12

That was my mother Grin I grew up thinking that was the correct pronunciation. So embarrassing.
