Have we got a leak?

Hoping there'll be a clever MNer who has a clue more than me.

Over the past few months all of our skirting boards around the utility room, toilet and kitchen have completely come away from the walls and have basically rotted away. They're damp to touch and the paint is peeling off the walls above. Also, the steps into our food cupboard have plastic edges which have also peeled off and the concrete underneath is wet to touch. There's no damp though. We've lived here 3 years and it only started a few months ago.

I'm assuming there's a leak somewhere but how would I know? I have no idea where to start. Who do we call out? Reported to landlord but nothing has been done.

Any help appreciated.

This happened to us. It was the fill pipe to the toilet cistern that was oozing and was a bugger to get to and which took 3 different plumbers to finally sort.
It then took about 6 months to properly dry out the downstairs cloakroom with a small dehumidifier running 24/7.

Yes you have a leak.

Sounds like it's under the floor. Insist on a plumber.

We have a big dehumidifier running constantly but it's not helping. I'll push for a plumber- I have no idea how they'll work out where it's coming from though.

Don't suppose you have a water meter?

MeredithMae · 20/09/2021 14:27

Not that I know of.

I've messaged the landlord again today asking again for a plumber.

Don't suppose you have a washing machine on the other side of the room concerned? My Mum had something similar in her ensuite and it was the connection to her washing machine the other side that was causing the problems.

Yes there's a washing machine. Not sure if it's that, the toilet, or the kitchen sink!
