My lights have gone out but cant locate the circuit breaker. Could it be here?

Hi everyone- ive recently moved to a new flat and didnt check where the circuit breaker was before the lights went out today 😬

Could it be the top grey box? I cant reach it with a ladder which poses a different problem but am just trying to identify it first

Yes it's the grey one

MrsGethinJones · 19/09/2021 19:44

Thanks @Needcoffeeimmediatley. Ive managed to open the box and it looks like this photo. The circuot breaker in my old flat didnt look like this. Do you know of this is correct?

In th grey box there will be lots of switches.

Is one opposite direction to the others?

StarCat2020 · 19/09/2021 19:50

Upload photo of inside of box if you are stuck

MrsGethinJones · 19/09/2021 20:30

Hi @StarCat2020 thanks - this is the inside of the box. I was expecting to see switches 😬.
I think i may need to get an electrician in in the morning to take a look

@MrsGethinJones I think it’s the bottom white box that has the switches in it. The one with red writing on it. It looks like there’s a flap to pull up where the tab/circle bit is at the bottom. I’m think it might be something like this? www.toolstation.com/contactum-17th-edition-amendment-3-garage-consumer-unit-2-mcbs/p31217

StarCat2020 · 19/09/2021 20:42

@MrsGethinJones
I was expecting to see rows of switches as well

I am also surprised that you needed a ladder to access it as it should be easy to access due to lights being out etc.

Could you call your landlord and ask where the fusebox is at all?

Or are the other flats or houses nearby similar to yours?

Could you ask a neighbour?

I am sorry that I wasn't more useful to you.

SirYawnsAlot · 19/09/2021 20:46

Have you lifted the flap up on the white box? That looks like the consumer unit.
The grey box looks like it is not meant to be opened.

MrsGethinJones · 19/09/2021 20:48

Thanks all - Ive tried the white box bit it relates to the communal hallway smoke alarm only 😬

WhatsitWiggle · 19/09/2021 20:49

Contactum is a consumer unit make, can you open the white one?

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/09/2021 20:49

You need to open the white box. It could be something as simple as a bulb going has tripped the lights off.

MrsGethinJones · 19/09/2021 20:51

The ivw tried the white one but i dont think thats it unfortunately.
I own the flat so there isnt a landlord to ask unfortunately. The other neighbours have the circuit breaker units in their flats however my neigjbour and I have searched high and low and we cant see one in my flat

Where's the electricity meter? When you were buying the flat the seller should have filled in a property information form stating where these things are.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/09/2021 06:43

Our switches that you have to reset if tripped are in a metal box like the one at the bottom.

I think there has been a change in electrical regulations at some point that meant that all new installations after a certain time have to be in a metal box.

I can't see anything in the grey box that you can reset to put the lights back on.

Twitchynose · 20/09/2021 20:16

@MrsGethinJones Did you manage to sort it?
Not that I’m nosey and wondering where it was or anything

Sparklfairy · 20/09/2021 20:18

Mine is just above my door in the communal hallway, have you looked outside your flat?

MrsGethinJones · 20/09/2021 20:23

Hi everyone thanks for checking on me!

I called the home emergency helpline thats connected to my bank account and they found it for me. The switches were built into a wall that had a panel flush against it, in a wardrobe in my basement! I would never have found it on my own

OP posts:
Twitchynose · 20/09/2021 20:41

That’s definitely not where I was expecting it to be! Glad you got it sorted.

5zeds · 20/09/2021 20:45

Shock what a ridiculous place to put it.

Where is the stopcock?

Hellocatshome · 20/09/2021 20:51

Where is the stopcock?

Great question, make sure you find out where it is before you need it!
