Am I too old to retrain as paramedic at 50?

Is this a crazy idea? Call it a midlife crisis or whatever but I am seriously considering it. Would be great to have views from paramedics.

Or rather an ambulance EMT which seems to be the entry point. I have a biology degree but have not been doing anything directly healthcare related in my career to date.

It's a competitive course, and your age might go against you.

It's also a very tiring job - obviously shift work, and can be very physical. Are you fit and strong?

Mind you, I do know someone who went to medical school in her late 30s and was fine, albeit knackered during junior doctor years, but I think everyone's tired then.

It’s a very hands on job unlike other 999 services who can retire at 50 you are expected to work to what is now 67 and there is no office job to transfer to when you nearly 70 and still expected lift and do everything the same. As PP said it’s long shifts constant stream of days early and lates so 2/3 shifts have you working till early hours. Every shift is 12h long plus as can’t just walk out durning calls. Family member is one and has no idea how they will manage in their 60s currently in their 40s.
