Escaped dogs have just killed my neighbours cat

Bit outing but I am so shaken up and feel physically sick.

Just witnessed the most horrific thing I have ever seen.

My dog started barking really badly, 2 dogs outside barking.

Eventually after a few mins I look out the window and there is horrific screaming.

2 escaped dogs attacking my neighbours cat. They killed it :(

I am shaking. It’s the most traumatic thing I have ever seen. Police uselsss.

Nobody knows where these dogs came from.

I don’t think I’ll ever let my dog off the lead again :(

There is no doubt in my mind these dogs would've killed a child.

@NoOtherShadeOfBlue

If it’s in a husky’s nature to escape, they aren’t suitable pets. Dogs should never be out of control.
No, it just means that people who choose to keep huskies need to take extra steps in order to keep their dogs safe.

Around here, it's always terriers and spaniels who have escaped their gardens or slipped out of the front door. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be kept as pets, it means the owners need to do more to keep their dogs safe.

It's not the huskies' fault their owners can't control them.

NoOtherShadeOfBlue · 19/09/2021 18:24

Oh it’s definitely the owner’s fault! I haven’t argued otherwise. But Chardonnay said upthread that huskies escape and huskies kill smaller animals as though both of these are inevitable. If they can’t be prevented from escaping as she suggested, they shouldn’t be kept as pets. If they can be prevented from escaping then owners who don’t take sufficient precautions should be prosecuted, fined and banned from keeping dogs.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/09/2021 18:29

I suggested that in response to the "it's cats nature to roam" tripe. If we can pander to cats' nature we should also respect other animals' nature.

NoOtherShadeOfBlue · 19/09/2021 18:31

Cats don’t cause the same harm and disruption as a pair of loose huskies. There is absolutely no defence of this particular owner, however much of an axe you have to grind about cats. Allowing dogs to escape and run wild is illegal for a reason.

loveyours · 19/09/2021 18:46

@redglobox

OP, ignore the posters trying to make out this is no big deal because cats kill birds. Presumably they would be similarly non plussed if they witnessed this / if it was their pet... Hmm

It must have been awful and very upsetting. I would be reporting this to anyone and everyone who would listen. Dogs like that running out of control could have injured or killed anything. The owner needs to be held accountable.

Exactly! Same people who (rightly) complain about dog attacks on other dogs. Don't get why people are so dismissive of somebody's pet cat being mauled.

Not the same as hunting a bird or mouse. Hearing a cat screaming and being torn apart vs a cat swatting a tiny mouse about.

Anyone would be shocked to witness what OP saw, and yes, very scary if you have young children. Could just as easily attack a child if it got upset by it.

SpnBaby1967 · 19/09/2021 18:52

My neighbours adorable Boston Terrier was killed by 2 Huskies a few weeks ago. They got into my neighbours garden over a low fence.

These dogs basically ripped his hind leg off, absolutely horrific.

I'm a cat owner, I would be beyond devastated if my cats were killed this way. As it is I have cat proofed my garden so they cant get out.

If we had more cats roaming the streets maybe out cities and towns wouldnt all have such a bad rat problem. I bet those lamenting at cats killing birds etc wouldnt be too pleased to have rats in their garden/street etc.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/09/2021 18:55

Hearing a cat screaming and being torn apart vs a cat swatting a tiny mouse about.

So I am minimising the damage dogs do, and this isn't minimising the damage cats do? Because the mouse is tiny it doesn't suffer and it doesn't scream? The birds don't suffer when they are torn apart by cats?

Your double standards are showing.

It can all be prevented by keeping cats indoors.

gailplattshairbrush · 19/09/2021 18:57

What some incredibly dense posters seem to be failing to grasp is that it's the law that cats are allowed to roam. Of course this carries risks of runways, car accidents etc and most cat owners weigh up the risks alongside their cats nature and quality of life. My cat is 90% an outdoor cat and I would rather take those risks than subject him to a miserable life indoors when that's not what he's used to.

The risks to outdoor cats however shouldn't extend to being mauled by off lead dogs because dogs should be leashed and controlled as per the law.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/09/2021 19:14

What some posters don't seem to grasp is that personal insults don't help put their point across.

Your cat might be happier outdoors but it lets it kill birds and small animals.

Actually I'm not minimising. Two days ago I saw one of our neighbourhood cats swatting a mouse about. Didn't eat thing. I have it on video.

A cat killing and eating is nowhere near the same as dangerous and unpredictable dogs about killing cats, which can also maim human beings.

Plumtree391 · 19/09/2021 19:20

Well, cats slow down as they get older. I know this very well because I had cats that lived to be old. There comes a time when they are no longer quick enough to catch birds and if they are heavy, they can't run up trees and along branches.

There are loads and loads of birds and more get away than are caught. I'm sure it's the same for mice, rats and frogs.

gailplattshairbrush · 19/09/2021 19:27

@ChardonnaysPetDragon oh my cat is way past his mice catching days now. But that's besides the point. A cat killing mice and birds isn't comparable to two aggressive, out of control dogs mauling a family pet.

You might not like it but the law agrees.

And you clearly have no tact or compassion to raise your issues with cats on a sensitive thread like this.

I'm starting to think that the 2 dogs in question belong to you.
StrongArm · 19/09/2021 19:55

I'm glad the dogs have been seized, that must have been horrific to watch

My mother's cat was killed by a dog - she saw it happen and it affected her mental health terribly and she never forgot it

Hope you're feeling a bit better, what a horrible shock

StrongArm · 19/09/2021 19:58

The whataboutery on this thread is shocking!

PufferFishGoneWrong · 19/09/2021 20:13

@lynntheyresexpeople

Crikey - no it's not the bloody same. The cat was someone's beloved pet. Yes it's very sad that cats kill things but come on. It's not the same, you know it isn't. Stop being goady for no reason.

I'm sorry you witnessed this op. I have a ragdoll cat for the very reason they aren't allowed to be outside. This would be my worst nightmare 💔

Just this. It's like people are saying, it doesn't matter that the dogs killed the cat as cats kills birds. WTAF!!!
PufferFishGoneWrong · 19/09/2021 20:31

@Willow19C

Imagine thinking it is normal for your pet dog to kill a cat.. Confused

I don't know how you all raise your dogs, but I hope I don't ever meet half of you! God knows what it's like in your houses. Envy

This so much.
AnnieSnap · 19/09/2021 20:54

The poor OP having to read all of this madness. She was distressed after witnessing something horrific and trying to support her distressed child and today, her grieving neighbour. It’s incredible how many people have used her post as an excuse to rant about cats killing wildlife. That is a very different debate. Mumsnet can be a nasty, dark place sometimes. Lots of intolerant twats on here.

MilesOfSand · 19/09/2021 22:38

I have massive sympathy for the OP and the cat and the cat’s owner. I do smile about the cat haters that come out on here though, pretty sure the majority of them will be meat eaters of animals raised and slaughtered cruelly.

AnnieSnap · 19/09/2021 23:02

@MilesOfSand Yes, no doubt they will be. Hypocrites!

MilesOfSand · 19/09/2021 23:05

Yes, I’m a hypocrite myself in many ways but under no doubt that humans are the biggest predators!

clarkkentsglasses · 20/09/2021 14:32

Update

Police came back over the weekend to take statements and we've now been informed the owner will be prosecuted.

We have also since learned this isn't the first time these 2x dogs have been reported.

Vet also confirmed that had anyone intervened they would've got caught in the cross fire.

OP posts:
clarkkentsglasses · 20/09/2021 14:34

Also, someone videoed the dogs and posted on a community FB page. It was reported and taken down as it was so distressing.

OP posts:
FleasInMyKnees · 20/09/2021 15:17

Good news about the owners, have the dogs been destroyed.

FleasInMyKnees · 20/09/2021 15:19

I dont understand how anyone could stand there, video this then think it's ok to post on a community page, that is a terrible thing to do.
