Escaped dogs have just killed my neighbours cat

Bit outing but I am so shaken up and feel physically sick.

Just witnessed the most horrific thing I have ever seen.

My dog started barking really badly, 2 dogs outside barking.

Eventually after a few mins I look out the window and there is horrific screaming.

2 escaped dogs attacking my neighbours cat. They killed it :(

I am shaking. It’s the most traumatic thing I have ever seen. Police uselsss.

Nobody knows where these dogs came from.

I don’t think I’ll ever let my dog off the lead again :(

There is no doubt in my mind these dogs would've killed a child.

There is no doubt in my mind these dogs would've killed a child. I'm sorry that you witnessed this but let me reassure you. A dog that kills a cat does not equate to a dog that kills a child, anymore than a cat that kills a mouse equates to a cat that attacks a child. Nature is brutal.

There is a case here in Ireland where a dog killed a child. Blood lust does not differentiate. Your comparison has no validity. and what amounts to a pack of dpgs?

I'm sorry you witnessed this op. I have a ragdoll cat for the very reason they aren't allowed to be outside. This would be my worst nightmare 💔

Dogs, cats, that's not the point, the point is OP saw and heard something which (perfectly reasonably) upset her.

OP - sit down, have a nice cup of tea (even add a sugar), things will feel less awful on the morning.

Not all cats are hunters, my girl has never caught a thing in over 13 years. Even boy cat only ever brought back ill or
Injured things - and no it wasn't him injuring them. Rat in a mousetrap anyone???

Most of our cats have been indoors only but those 2 were rehomes that were very insistent that they refused to be indoor cats.

It doesn't take 2 strong and brave adults to hold back a cat from attacking anything or anyone further does it?

I'm not a cat lover to be honest but this was hideously traumatic to see, every dog in the street was barking behind closed doors it was so noisy.

You don't hear this from cats everyday do you?

Similar happened on my doorstep a few years ago, horrific.

The owner was drunk and just let them out in the street instead of walking them, she's known for doing it a lot. She heard the shouting and stumbled round got her dogs and the dead cat and went home.

Council said police matter nothing they can do.
Police said it's just nature and nothing they can do.

OP, ignore the posters trying to make out this is no big deal because cats kill birds. Presumably they would be similarly non plussed if they witnessed this / if it was their pet...

It must have been awful and very upsetting. I would be reporting this to anyone and everyone who would listen. Dogs like that running out of control could have injured or killed anything. The owner needs to be held accountable.

I’m amazed by some of the messages on here OP, and I say that as a cat and dog owner.

What you have experienced tonight must have been very traumatic for you and others. Horrific. Sending you best wishes.

In my experience, a dog that escapes and uses the opportunity to kill a cat is a dog that has serious behavioural issues. As well as the dogs being out of control, I would also think your neighbour has a claim for criminal damage against the dog owner, given that the cat was her property - so I’m disappointed that the police weren’t interested.

I can’t believe the cat haters chiming in; really - a cat being torn apart by two uncontrolled dogs being equated to cats hunting? You shouldn’t be responsible for animals if you feel that way.

I have to disagree with @Shamoo , lots of dogs would kill a cat given an opportunity it doesn’t mean they have behavioural issues , it means they don’t like cats . It must of been a horrific thing to witness @clarkkentsglasses , poor cat and poor neighbour .

It happened to my friend cat, and it was highly traumatic for her and her kids. In that case the dogs were not properly controlled/looked after by their owner, who didn't care. The cat died very quickly of shock if that helps.

Well, I do feel that way about cats hunting when the neighbour's cats eat the lovely little native birds in my garden (Australia, so cats a massive ecological problem here). I love those birds.

Just because a cat does not bring home it's prey does not mean it does not catch and kill. Unless it has never roamed free then you are naive to think it has never caught and killed other animals.

You can also feel sorry for the cat and point out that hunting behaviour and aggression are two entirely separate things. A dog that hunts is not necessarily aggressive.

Yes, the dogs should not have been roaming. They might have been roaming because they had irresponsible owners, or it might have been a genuine accident - a child leaving a gate open or something.

It sounds like a horrible experience, but how do you know it wasn't an accident that the dogs were loose?

It is a traumatic thing to witness, and the statements that cats kill, so it is all part of the circle of life are not comparable. There are thousands of stray and feral cats that have to hunt in order to survive, and cats do a good job in controlling vermin on many rural properties.
It's a bit like saying anyone who eats meat is okay being murdered. Had it been !ivestock, then these dogs would likely have been destroyed, when dogs attack in a pack they can be dangerous, I hope the owners are dealt with appropriately. I also hope your poor son is okay op.

I think we can all agree that seeing 2 dogs viscously attack and probably pull apart a cat isn't the same as witnessing a cat take a bird home. What they witnessed was brutal and traumatic and the noise.

I'm sorry you witnessed it. It's awful. Such a sad thing to happen.

I used to back onto a cycle track and heard a woman scream for help for her dog. We raced round the back and it had been badly injured by a dog near us from the description the lady said we knew exactly who's dog it was. This dog wasn't even off the lead. It's just viscous and always has been.
