Bit outing but I am so shaken up and feel physically sick.

Just witnessed the most horrific thing I have ever seen.

My dog started barking really badly, 2 dogs outside barking.

Eventually after a few mins I look out the window and there is horrific screaming.

2 escaped dogs attacking my neighbours cat. They killed it :(

I am shaking. It’s the most traumatic thing I have ever seen. Police uselsss.

Nobody knows where these dogs came from.

I don’t think I’ll ever let my dog off the lead again :(

There is no doubt in my mind these dogs would've killed a child.

Could you take a walking stick with you when you walk your dog? It wouldn't be safe to scoop up your dog if it was attacked by these dogs but you could use the stick to fend off the attack.

WheresYourSnickers · 19/09/2021 00:22

Sorry you had to witness that, poor cat & poor cat owner too

MrsCatE · 19/09/2021 00:22

Oh do sod off @SelkieQualia - don’t you have weird laws in Australia that domesticated cats have to be indoors re the wildlife threat? We don’t have the same here hence, expect people to control their animals. I would not be happy to come across roaming dogs on my own, let alone with a child. This cat was torn apart in front of its owner and freaked out neighbour by two, uncontrolled dogs.

Dobbyafreeelf · 19/09/2021 00:25
@ChardonnaysPetDragon they are not less worthy.

It doesn't take 2 strong and brave adults to hold back a cat from attacking anything or anyone further does it?

I'm not a cat lover to be honest but this was hideously traumatic to see, every dog in the street was barking behind closed doors it was so noisy.

You don't hear this from cats everyday do you?
Actually a few years ago my then puppy was attacked by a cat. Pup was on the lead and minding her own business when the cat attacked. I was badly scratched by the cat. My dog was not the only one attacked.

Over the course of a few weeks the same cat started going for kids walking into or home from school. Several children had to go to minor injuries and a man had to have surgery as he was so badly bitten.

1forAll74 · 19/09/2021 00:25

A few years ago, one of my three cats, the Mother of the other two, was hassled and snarled and snapped at, by the nasty yappy poodle next door, and she lurched at the dog, with claws out.and attacked the dog. The big poodle never bothered her again., and scooted in it's own house if it saw my super cat outside my door again.

StoatMilk · 19/09/2021 00:28

@Sarahlou63

Sadly that's what dogs do. Cats do it too. Animals chase, catch and kill other animals. Even horses bite, kick and sometimes try to kill other horses.

So do people.

If you haven't got anything helpful to say, wind your neck in Hmm
leccyandgas · 19/09/2021 00:29

I know farmers are allowed to shoot any dogs which they find worrying their sheep or other livestock. Are members of the public allowed to take action against dogs who are ripping apart family pets ?

MatildaIThink · 19/09/2021 00:29

@Stickytreacle

It is a traumatic thing to witness, and the statements that cats kill, so it is all part of the circle of life are not comparable. There are thousands of stray and feral cats that have to hunt in order to survive, and cats do a good job in controlling vermin on many rural properties. It's a bit like saying anyone who eats meat is okay being murdered. Had it been !ivestock, then these dogs would likely have been destroyed, when dogs attack in a pack they can be dangerous, I hope the owners are dealt with appropriately. I also hope your poor son is okay op.
There are also many cats which kill hundreds of animals a year, small birds, amphibians etc. which are already declining in population, there are too many cats and they are hugely ecologically damaging. Dogs are far less to not at all damaging to the immediate environment, although they do have a climate change impact.

It is nothing like saying anyone who eats meat is ok with being murdered, but some people do get very childish about animals being killed, whilst being meat eaters. If you are not prepared to kill an animal then it is childish to demand to be allowed to eat meat.

Not everything is "traumatic" just because someone did not want to see it, animals kill animals, dogs will kill occasionally cats and rabbits if they can catch them, smaller dogs will kill rats. Cats will kill birds, rodents and amphibians. Foxes will kill chickens, rabbits etc. Birds of prey will kill other birds and rodents etc.

If a farmer finds dogs attacking livestock then yes he will usually shoot them, but they are only very rarely destroyed if not shot at the time.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/09/2021 00:31

I think what has totally freaked me out is if my little dog got out it could've been him killed.

While it was horrible what you saw, you don't know if your little dog (or a child could have been killed), there is as much possibility your little dog would have joined in when confronted with dogs attacking a cat.

swimlyn · 19/09/2021 00:32

…haven’t read the link, but surely that’s just because they’re easier to catch?

Not a problem. I only posted the link to see the pretty blue text.

Nice, innit?

Yes, but members of the public are not generally allowed to carry guns or other weapons on public, so options are usually far more limited.
leccyandgas · 19/09/2021 00:34

What about an airgun ? I know someone with an airgun.

clarkkentsglasses · 19/09/2021 00:37

@MatildaIThink

My son hiding under his duvet inside when this was going on outside was pretty upsetting.

Not everyone has a thick skin and can brush such things off.

@clarkkentsglasses again, much sympathy for your awful experience; I really can’t imagine what I would have done or how I would have reacted - I hope I would have been able to intervene but think I would have been too shocked. Basically, FUCK off to all the cat haters / people trying to hijack your Thread.

MatildaIThink · 19/09/2021 00:40

@leccyandgas

An airgun is still legally a firearm, you just do not need a FAC for it. You can not carry one in public, only on private land and will struggle to kill anything bigger than a rabbit with one. Shooting a dog with an air rifle is more likely to piss it off than kill it, followed shortly by the police having a much bigger issue with you for carrying and discharging a gun in a place not permitted.
NowEvenBetter · 19/09/2021 00:41

That must have been awful to witness. Shit dog owners and shit cat owners to have released their pet to the risks of nature/traffic/poison/torture instead of keeping it indoors or in a secure garden.

millenialblush · 19/09/2021 00:44

This exact thing happen to my cat and quire frankly those justifying it by saying cats kill too are just poor dog owners who know that if it came to it they wouldn't have control of their dog if it went mental.

A cat is someone's pet and if this post were about a dog killing another dog I'm sure everyone would be up in arms.

AnnieSnap · 19/09/2021 00:51

I can’t believe so many posters are responding to this by saying cats kill other animals! What is wrong with you? This poor woman and the others concerned just witnessed something horrific and really traumatic 🤷‍♀️

Stickytreacle · 19/09/2021 00:52

Of course somebodys pet being ripped to pieces in front of them is bloody traumatic! I come from a family that produced their own meat, and it was killed quickly and humanely with a bucket of feed in front of it. I've also witnessed our stock being worried by dogs, it is in different league to a cat hunting for food. As per the previous link, the ecological damage you refer to is probably far less than you believe. I do agree on one point in that there are too many cats and neutering should be a priority, but that is from a welfare perspective.

HemanOrSheRa · 19/09/2021 00:54

clarkkentsglasses I understand how awful it is. Many years ago our neighbours cat was attacked by two dogs. The owners were with them, they'd been hunting in nearby woods. It was a summer's evening so we were all out in our gardens. The noise of the dogs barking, the poor cat screaming and our neighbours screaming and shouting was absolutely horrific. Let alone the sight of the attack Sad. I'm sorry you experienced similar Flowers.

echt · 19/09/2021 00:55

Well, I do feel that way about cats hunting when the neighbour's cats eat the lovely little native birds in my garden (Australia, so cats a massive ecological problem here). I love those birds

I'd go for no more than one cat per household and frankly, get rid of all the ferals.

The elephant in the room is the removal of habitat for birds in Australian gardens.

OP is sharing an incident that has caused her upset its sad that people are minimising that. I eat meat every day but it would still be distressing to see somebody's beloved pet killed in front of me. I witnessed a dog attack a fox that had got into its garden one day and the sound was terrible, luckily it got away with some injuries but it wasn't a nice thing to see.
