Anyone know what’s going on? Quite a few columns ending this week, Zoe Williams, Hadley Freeman, Jess Cartner-Morley. At least Tim Dowling is around still

That's curious. I'd like to know why too. Having said that, once you've read one you've read them all.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/09/2021 10:32

Oh nooo Sad

Love Tim Dowling, though I've only recently been brave enough to resume eating courgettes from the garden after the poisoning column.

AliceWo · 18/09/2021 10:32

I don't think Hadley Freeman is on board with the Guardian's attitude to trans rights (ie she very vocally is in favour of single sex spaces and that transwomen aren't women). I don't know if that is why she is leaving though.

Yes all a bit weird, from the comments there’s a few others going as well and a bit of pondering. Feels like somethings afoot… Getting rid of print?!

They're having a single magazine rather than Weekend, Guide, Review. There's usually a bit of a clear out when the format changes.

Bionicname · 18/09/2021 10:41

Looks like they are stopping the print weekend magazine :

God I used to love the old graun. Could never imagine reading anything else. Would start every day with coffee and the news and opinion columns; spent hours relaxing with the Weekend paper on Saturday mornings.

Haven’t read it much for a couple of years now and its recent switch to anti-women activism has meant I’ve subscribed to the Times instead. A shame, but, like Labour, enough is enough.

Mufflette · 18/09/2021 11:28

Why in earth would Tim Dowling be the one of all of those to stay?! I'll miss all the others, but will have to see what they are replaced with in the new format.

TheAntiGardener · 18/09/2021 11:36

Hadley Freeman’s column today would back up Alice’s suspicions - and is only surprising for how long it has taken to come. But it looks like it’s just the end of Zoe Williams’ fitness column, not her as a guardian columnist.

I’ve recently started listening to the Blocked and Reported podcast and the Guardian often pops up in dispatches. I’d love to hear Hadley on it now she’s able to be fully open.

longwayoff · 18/09/2021 11:37

I'll be sticking with the Guardian, it's all there is that isn't home to right wing frothing. However, I don't like a lot of it and frequently am exasperated by reading stuff that belongs in a student magazine. Won't miss any of the leavers. As long as Jay Rayner is still around on occasion, and John Crace, it'll do.

Elieza · 18/09/2021 12:05

Furloughs ending around now isn’t it?

Perhaps there are financial repercussions from that which are affecting the paper so they are cutting back on wages by reducing expenditure on columns?

Hen2018 · 18/09/2021 12:12

I can’t read Tim Dowling’s column. His wife sounds so awful that it makes me sad.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/09/2021 12:14

I used to tell my friend who wanted to break into journalism but had a severe case of imposter syndrome to just channel Marina Hyde, Tim Dowling et al.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/09/2021 12:15

Talking cat makes up for it though.

I think it's traditional for male columnists to portray their wives as harridans. Before TD it was Jon Ronson, and I think Mil Millington as well, back in the day?
