Over-packers unite! What do you always forget to pack?

I am a terrible packer. Cannot be denied.

Currently packing for a 10 day trip, leaving Saturday, I always forget things and in trying to avoid this pack a load of shite I don't need.

What are the things you forget? Maybe if I can cover those bases I won't overpack all the other crap.

Bin bag for dirty laundry. Smaller carrier bags for dirty shoes. But it depends where you and going and with whom.

DuneFan · 16/09/2021 13:20

Pyjamas and hairbrush!

oneglassandpuzzled · 16/09/2021 13:22

Chargers
Enough socks if wearing trainers/other such dootwear

LaBellina · 16/09/2021 13:24

Things I use right before I leave and then forget to put in my suitcase after I used them.
Chargers, slippers, moisturizer, toothpaste.

Oohh, preparation is one of my favourite things about a holiday. I work out what I will need by starting with anything for which I need special equipment, Swimming, goggles, thermals for skiing, walking boots etc.

Then count the number of normal days, for which I need a daytime outfit snd something go to change into in the evening. Two sets of underwear each day.

On my phone, maybe a spreadsheet, I then work out what outfits to pack, any accessories I want to wear with them and anything else I need to get ready.

Add in the usual phone charger cables, headphones, an extension cable with lots of usb and power sockets, this means you only need one converted for the plug to provide lots of sockets.

Make sure everything you want is clean and set out visible (bed in spare room ideal) so you can see everything. Prune away what you don't need and only put it all in the case the night before you go. Stops you throwing extra things in last minute.

Minimum is my passport, phone, toothbrush and credit card.

I often find myself a tad constipated in the first few days so take some senna pods to make tea last thing.

Keep the list from one holiday to the next, add anything you missed off last time so after a while you can do the plan in a couple of minutes.

Enjoy being a black belt packing ninja

I bought an extra of each, ie extra hairbrush, hair towel, etc to avoid the stress on leaving home. Game changer!

Packing cubes are excellent if you haven't discovered them already.
For me I Often forget

comb/hairbrush
Deodorant
Charger leads

The stuff that can’t go in until the day of departure. Things the kids sleep with for eg. Phone chargers. If I’ve put food or booze in the fridge ready the night before it often gets forgotten about Grin
Also a day/ night bag. So many times we’ve had to carry stuff round in a plastic bag because I’ve packed the cases brilliantly but forgot backpacks for the day/ handbags etc.

Bigoldmachine · 16/09/2021 13:53

Plasters, antihistamine cream or tablets, paracetamol!

TopTabby · 16/09/2021 13:58

Check! I grabbed my walking boots out of the garage, they're always kept in a Tesco bag. Put them straight in the car, in the bag. Thought I was so organised.
Went to put them on a day or 2 into the holiday....opened the bag to find 2 pairs of my dd's old school loafers that she'd put in the garage ready for the charity shop & also in a Tesco bag!
Walking was limited after that, we aren't even the same size!

Also I forgot to pack any bras except the one I travelled in which was completely the wrong colour for the rest of my outfits....
I'm normally more organised than that!Shock

RubyFakeLips · 16/09/2021 14:25

We're off to Greece/Greek Island tour. We've got our kit for snorkelling & diving but other than its just beaching about and hopefully long dinners.
Just DH and I, have ditched the kids, most being adults now anyway.

Bin bag for dirty laundry is a great idea and something I never remember.

I'm not helped by DH being a complete travel flapper. Hyping me up about minutiae. We really are blind leading the blind.

Sunglasses.
I haven't forgotten them yet but it's inevitable... cheap spectacles.
Comb, deodorant, toothpaste.

Seainasive · 16/09/2021 23:18

A tea towel. I now have a fine collection of hideously overpriced ones from various resorts.

user1471557598 · 16/09/2021 23:25

Recently back from Corfu- we always pack couple of little ponchos for this time of year for any sudden downpours. Did use them this year too!

Justmuddlingalong · 16/09/2021 23:29

A travel tube of clothes detergent.
Rennies.
Decent hair conditioner.

user1471557598 · 16/09/2021 23:30

As above if I am self catering I take a tea towel, small sharp knife, little washing up liquid bottle and a sponge because I’m not trailing round a supermarket just to find single items of those!

FlowerArranger · 16/09/2021 23:38

I have a standard pack list on my phone, with subsections for speciality holidays, eg skiing, beach, visiting relatives etc.

Also a list of things to do at the last minute, which I pin to the front door: empty fridge, switch off boiler, close windows, lock patio door, check lights are off and no tap is dripping… and a reminder about chargers!

I have a small zipped bag which contains essentials and which lives in a drawer in my study. Contains passport, vaccination card, a credit card only used for travel, foreign currency, travel insurance card, etc - plus an eye mask.

Giggorata · 16/09/2021 23:39

Socks. I always forget socks. I remember underwear, chargers, moisturiser, pills, mascara, deodorant, but not bloody socks.
So I buy a pack of socks.
Now I have enough socks to open a shop.

Heronatemygoldfish · 16/09/2021 23:43

My tripod. Every.stuffing.time I go somewhere with stunningly dark skies I forget my sodding tripod.
