I don't like my new job

I worked part time in a job with no career progression. It was reasonably paid. A job came up in another area of the same company that I went for thinking I wouldn't get but that I have always been interested in and has career progression. To my surprise I got the job. Both jobs are the same pay band and part time so no increase in pay or change to hours.

I have been doing the job for 6 months now. It is extremely busy and stressful. I can't believe I am on the same pay. I have been tempted to ask for my old job back which technically I could do as I am on secondment. However I know this would cause issues for my company who have back filled my role.

I think part of my issue is I have a young DC age 1 and I feel there are more important things than all this stress. I just want to be able to finish work on time and not have to think about it until the next day. But at the same time I feel I am giving up such a good opportunity to have any sort of career.

Any advice?

I would 100% ask for your old job back if you're not earning any more and have a worse quality of life, if you're prepared to sacrifice the progression you moved for.

Alternatively, could you discuss workload vs salary with your line manager?

Your baby won't be a baby forever and in 2 or 3 years the progression may be well worth the extra work now.

I think it's up to you what your long term goals are. If you want to progress in your career perhaps stay a while longer for skills and cv reasons. But if you're happy to take a career break or remain at the same level go back to your old job?

I think you just have to do what is best for you and your family. Personally I wouldn't worry about it being difficult for your workplace. If anything happened to you they would replace you in a heartbeat.

I think it depends what your chances for progression are in this new job, and what exactly is stressful about it. It could be stuff that can be handled with some adjustments, or stuff you get used to after a while… can you elaborate?
