Things you thought were normal/harmless until joining mumsnet

(Lighthearted )
lots of things that I thought were quite normal /fine/harmless before I joined MM seem to be quite abhorrent to a large percentage of posters. I often find myself wondering about whether my perceived normal is actually the minority. Some examples

Home made food or cakes - I bloody love home made cakes and think they are always nicer than shop bought - my first thoughts when offered one is usually yum, a cake! I've never given a moments thought to whether the person owns cats or dogs or has a hygeine certificate.

Ensuite bathrooms - I've got an ensuite bathroom. It's used for any instance where you may need a toilet. Apparently this is very very wrong.

Eating carbs

Bayliss and Harding toiletries - I would not be offended by this as a gift unless it was from my husband

(I'm with you on Thorntons though - they are nasty)

Answering the door to someone - if I see ex criminals selling stuff door to door, I dont answer, otherwise I dont have a problem with answering the door, and i get on with all of my neighbours.

Speaking to and socialising with work colleagues - i speak to, socialise (outside of work) and am friends with most of my work colleagues. I'd count many of them as friends. We buy each other birthday cards and presents and sometimes bring in cakes. (See point 1)

What are the things you've been educated on since joining MN?

Tattoos. They are really not a big deal, like at all in real life.. on mn? You may as well lock yourself away for the rest of your life if you have one

peboh · 16/09/2021 17:50

Talking a stranger in public.

cansu · 16/09/2021 17:50

answering the door - most people on mumsnet seem to find this anxiety inducing and get v annoyed if anyone dares to knock on their door

I (a quite heavily tattooed person) haven't actually seen any negativity to tattoos on any of the threads I've been on haha.

Liking and getting on with your neighbours
Liking and getting on with your work colleagues
Liking and getting on with your in laws

LST · 16/09/2021 17:54

@peboh Really?! It's normally the most mentioned thing on opinion threads!

Batshitkerazy · 16/09/2021 18:01

Putting pet bowls in the dishwasher. Never gave it a second thought before joining mumsnet

rslsys · 16/09/2021 18:09

We only have small to medium sized salads, never massive ones . . .

@Antsinyourpanta

Also, the recent thread about when you should turn up if invited for dinner at 7pm really opened my eyes. It astonished me that anyone would consider it acceptable to arrive before 7.10pm!

I'm confused. This seems like a trick question. What is the right answer...? Blush

Can you tell I dont get invited for dinner very often?🤣

omg I remember this. Certainly never before 7 and 7 on the dot is iffy.

Luckily I never get invited to dinner Grin

Using the ceiling light in the living room.

Living in only a 3 bed house with only one bathroom and the children not having their own living room and bathroom each in addition to their own double bedroom.

@beguilingeyes

This may not be an MN thing...but having the washing machine in the kitchen. It's something I really notice now...we're house hunting at the moment.
I wouldnt have anywhere else to put one!
BippityBoppity87 · 16/09/2021 19:02

I dunno. If someone said 7ish and it was a casual dinner party or what have you, I'd probably arrive between 7:05 and 7:10/7:15. If going to, for example, the cinema and meeting at theirs beforehand, then I'd arrive at 7, no later than 7:05, as planned. Probably depends on what it is

peboh · 16/09/2021 19:02

@LST I must just miss those. Will definitely keep an eye out in future haha.

PaperDolphin · 16/09/2021 19:04

My children not having swimming lessons.

RunningStrong · 16/09/2021 19:15

Having someone (even a man) strike up conversation in a shop.

Doing a favour for someone or doing something just because it makes someone else happy. Perfectly normal in my world and works both ways on a regular basis, but on MN you must never risk being taken advantage of.

Bumsex Friday.

RunningStrong · 16/09/2021 19:18

Everyone paying for themselves at a birthday meal.

Everyone bringing drink to a party.

BlowDryRat · 16/09/2021 19:19

Wedding gift lists. MNers seem to hate them but I find them inoffensive and useful.

MurielSpriggs · 16/09/2021 19:20

omg I remember this. Certainly never before 7 and 7 on the dot is iffy.

I seem to remember arriving after 7 was deeply problematic (and probably "grim"). Better just to cancel and avoid a terrible social minefield!

When I came on MN I discovered that making friends is sad . Every other MNetter was far too busy to speak to saddo mums outside the school, far too involved in a hobby to speak to fellow participants, and certainly not open to friendly overtures at work. “I have my friends already” donchaknow.

I wondered where they had found their great friends. Must be some secret foetal signal as it appears that if you haven’t got a closed circle by one year old you’re a complete loser.
