Empty shelves - how bad is it around you?

I'm currently visiting London, from the South coast.

Sainsbury's was a shocker

Whole fridges empty, with their shutters down.

Most other shelves a third full at best

Last time I went to the shops was about a week ago, on the south coast, and it wasn't that bad then, although I can't say about now. Some groceries missing, nothing like this

Haven't noticed any empty shelves at all in Bristol.

aldi last week only thing i couldnt get was tinned whole plum tomatoes every thing else no problem

Tesco deliveries not too bad but dh recently went to M and S and it looked as though a horde of vultures had picked the shelves clean. Was late in the day though.

It does seem to be mostly fresh food that’s not available and you can’t stockpile that anyway.

Our Waitrose is struggling for croissant stock.

It's a big local issue.

We won't starve, but weekend breakfasts aren't what they were Wink

Madcats · 16/09/2021 17:23

I can't say that I've noticed much difference in Bath. Waitrose looks pretty well stocked, as does our local Coop.

I've been getting deliveries from Morrisons (think it comes from a warehouse rather than the local shop) most weeks and haven't had any substitutions for ages (I stopped using Ocado about 6 months ago because their stock seemed so unreliable).

We tend to cook most meals from scratch and aren't overly bothered about buying specific brands (so I might not have noticed if some things are unavailable).

You may want to sign the NFU campaign. It is asking the Government to commit to the UK self sufficiency above 60% In 2020, the UK’s overall food self-sufficiency was 60%. In 1984, it was 78%.

I was in my local Co-op today. Freezer section completely empty.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/09/2021 23:12

I'm in the West Mids.

South Scotland, Aldi had no free range eggs for a couple of days this week, very little in the way of fruit juice, no crisps (OK for 'monster munch' type stuff, but no plain crisps. Have been short on soft fruit recently,

Went to the huge Tesco at Slough station this evening and it must have been right after a restock, was absolutely full of everything - didn't see any empty shelves at all. I think it's patchy and random, not across the board by any means.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 17/09/2021 20:22

2 conversations of interest today. Co-op was looking very bare- so I asked the manager when the next delivery was due. I said I would pop back straight after a delivery, so there was more choice. He said, sorry, this is actually straight after a delivery, you should have seen how little we had this morning........

The other one was an email. School dialling back a few notches on uniform enforcement for the time being, in acknowledgement of the long term local scarcity of many basic items of standard uniform clothing, in particular plain dark skirts for girls. ( among other things)

Everything well-stocked, including fruit and veg, in Greece🤗

CovidCorvid · 17/09/2021 20:26

My local M&S food hall have a whole aisle of fridges which used to stock food now stocking wine instead. Wine which does not need to be kept in a fridge. I suspect they think it looks better than having empty fridges. But it’s been like it for six months. 🤷‍♀️

DroopyClematis · 17/09/2021 20:34

I've noticed that most of our local Tesco and Sainsbury's have got hardly any ready meals and have filled the remaining space with boxes of Heineken, Budweiser and Coca-Cola.
Doesn't bother us but I think that time-hungry families might be affected by this.

MotherofPearl · 17/09/2021 20:40

Yes OP, I've had the school uniform problem. I ordered some school skirts for DD from the school outfitters weeks ago (start of August), and they keep emailing to say they're still waiting for stock. School insist that they wear a skirt with the school logo on the side, but her old skirts are so short and faded I'm tempted to buy plain black and be done with it.
