Empty shelves - how bad is it around you?

I'm currently visiting London, from the South coast.

Sainsbury's was a shocker

Whole fridges empty, with their shutters down.

Most other shelves a third full at best

Last time I went to the shops was about a week ago, on the south coast, and it wasn't that bad then, although I can't say about now. Some groceries missing, nothing like this

North West

No significant issues in any of the shops where I live

Similar to a pp, my Ocado orders for the last few weeks have all been complete.
Last weekend I placed an order with Morrison's and the following items were out of stock: coleslaw, potato salad, cucumber and Lucozade. I went on to Ocado to compare and they had them all in stock.

Tesco delivery man told me the other week bottled water was short but that is not a bad thing surely, people may get out of the habit of drinking it, he said that some households order crates of it 😯

Well I’m in a largish town in Gloucestershire, Asda has lots of empty shelves every day, they had no milk the other day! I went to Sainsbury’s yesterday, slightly better in there but hardly any cereals 🤔

frumpety · 15/09/2021 20:20

The big supermarkets in Penzance seemed well stocked when I was there a few weeks ago, the smaller Co-op's had gaps, mainly crisps and soft drinks.
Up here it's similar, big supermarkets quite well stocked, although soft drinks and sparkling water in very short supply. Also it seems to be changing daily, went to Morrisons the other day and they had hardly any toilet rolls, went in today and shelves full of them.

@Zeal

Love the way the two posters from the holiday regions - Cornwall and Cotswolds - scare monger. It's like "don't move here" draw bridge mentality. Sainsbury's in Penzance, Falmouth and Bude have been well stocked on the days I have been in.
You are referring to me. I’m not scare mongering, I simply answered a question.
frumpety · 15/09/2021 20:25

DH also went to Lidl today and said there were lots of gaps on the shelves, but that sometimes is the case when they are expecting a delivery.

IncessantNameChanger · 15/09/2021 20:28

It's all normal here 30 miles out of London. Just been to Lidl and sainsbury's tonight and they even had bottled water.

Shodan · 15/09/2021 20:28

Surrey here- the Tesco superstore had very empty freezer sections- the veg section was very sparse.

No edamame beans, for which I've developed a particular fondness, or even broad beans.

The rest seemed fairly normal though.

Oh bugger off extrapolating opinions where none were given.

‘lots of gaps' is hardly scare mongering.

Those posters were simply reporting their experience - it’s perfectly possible the Cornish poster doesn’t live near Penzance, Falmouth or Bude!

frumpety · 15/09/2021 20:30

It doesn't seem to be a case of they can't get stuff at all, just not as quickly as they used to due to HGV driver shortages, wonder which supermarkets are paying the best rates ?

catzrulz · 15/09/2021 20:30

Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland here, we have a Morrison's which I used to use all the time. Recently they removed the £5 voucher scheme and we use an App which gives us money off our usual items.
Unfortunately all the things I'm getting money off are out of stock, even diluting juice etc. Pasta, flour and staples are slowly running out.

Thesearmsofmine · 15/09/2021 20:31

I’ve been to a big Tesco this evening and the only shelf that was empty was bottled squash. Everything seemed normal enough.(West Yorkshire)

Sexnotgender · 15/09/2021 20:32

In Scotland, not noticed any issues other than sparkling water.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/09/2021 20:32

My experience is that Sainsburys was gappy, Tesco has been fine but expensive all summer and during my first visit to Lidl in a touristy area for while I noticed nothing out of place.

BeenAroundTheWorldAndIII · 15/09/2021 20:33

We get Morrison's weekly, rarely any substitutions and if so it's usually the same thing in a different flavour/scent.

BeenAroundTheWorldAndIII · 15/09/2021 20:34

@Runningforcakes

Very bad in our coop! Whole fridges of fresh stuff completely empty-literally no cheese, meat, yogurts, ready meals etc. The dessert fridge had one lonely pack of chocolate eclairs in the whole thing!
Sounds exactly how our local coop has been for years! Never seen full shelves in coop before brexit/covid
BogRollBOGOF · 15/09/2021 20:35

A few supermarkets near me have been spacing the stock to spread it over the area. Noticed in biscuits, cereals, soft drinks.

It's nothing like 18th March 2020 though!

Shallwegoforawalk · 15/09/2021 20:36

North Scotland - Tesco has had no sparkling water for ages, some gaps in drinks, freezer and fresh veg sections.

Small local co-op has had low stocks of ready meals and other things randomly (very empty crisp aisle one day) but then a few days later stuff is back and something else has gone out.

Lady in co-op said that all their deliveries are late or coming at unexpected times and it's due to lack of drivers. Also they had some staff off with Covid so didn't have as many bodies to restock the shelves as quickly as usual.

champagneplanet · 15/09/2021 20:40

A few empty shelves in our local Tesco Superstore at the weekend. it seems to be mainly certain products, I couldn't get the cereal I wanted (although they did have some), no kitchen roll, hardly any bottled water, and no juice cartons for DDs lunchbox. All fairly basic items I don't usually struggle to get.

M&S today however was fully stocked. I'm in the North West.

careerchangeperhaps · 15/09/2021 20:43

I'm in Devon. Lidl has been sparse for weeks. Sainsbury's looks like it's been ransacked even when you go in first thing. Tesco is not too bad but there are some gaps.

rooarsome · 15/09/2021 20:47

Absolutely fine in the NW

Tailsorheads · 15/09/2021 20:52

Not food related….

I was in a cycle shop today buying lights for my bike and got into a discussion with the assistant who said that anyone ordering a bike just now is looking at 8 week wait.

There will be lots of disappointed kids this Christmas, Santa needs to be ordering cycles soon. 🚴

Reduxrabbit · 15/09/2021 20:55

Just back from Sainsbury’s in Falmouth and can report yes, lots of gaps, supplies have been patchy for many weeks.

H1Drangea · 15/09/2021 20:58

My local Tesco is running out of really daft things
Haven’t been able to get the cheap , sparkling water for ages
Today , the crisp aisle was empty and there was no frozen fruit
I couldn’t get a cauli or fresh berries on Sunday
The wine aisle is always nearly empty on a Friday
Wales

bumblingbovine49 · 15/09/2021 21:00

I haven't been in a supermarket for months so have no idea about empty shelves I'm afraid . Nothing to do with Covid, but I have done my food shopping online for 15+ years and tend to avoid supermarkets if I can.
