Cleaning copper

I want to clean a big old copper pot. It's quite heavily tarnished. I have seen loads of products online but some have mixed reviews. Any recommendations

I have no suggestions but following. I have copper sheets behind my woodburner which are relatively new but I keep thinking I should clean and protect them from tarnishing as best I can

Brasso or the pink stuff

Silvo and a polishing cloth works well on copper

I've heard , a few times, that tomato ketchup does the trick though I don't know for sure as I don't have any copper.

Tomato ketchup had varying results on my modern copper sandwich pans. I would say no to ketchupping an old one.

Vinger salt and lemon juice in fairly equal quantities. Rub in on and you will see the tarnish literally lift in front of your eyes!!

Does it need to be fresh Lemon, and is it white vinegar

Yes its white vinegar and I used bottled lemon and it worked really well

Use Brasso (wadding is easiest) and polish off with a clean cloth. It's purpose designed for polishing metal and has been around for decades. It's not expensive either!

Plump82 · 15/09/2021 08:20

Definitely Pink Stuff. It cleans everything!

CrazyCatStory · 15/09/2021 08:57

I just used a half a lemon with a load of salt on. Rubbed the cut side on the copper and it cleaned it up fantastically (big old copper pot I had made into a sink).

Brasso

MrsFin · 15/09/2021 09:38

Ditto Brasso!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2021 11:03

I have a big old Arabian wooden chest largely covered with brass and copper decoration - I use Brasso wadding but should add that I only do it once a year before Christmas - the smell of Brasso has come to smell very Christmassy to me!

Also have a couple of old copper pots, also from the Middle East. Ditto Brassoed before being filled with Christmassy arrangements of greenery.
