Does anyone feel like this after a migraine?

I had a migraine last night, felt it coming on during the day, thought I’d managed to nip it in the bud but about 11pm it came with vengeance until about 5.30am (half an hour before I had to be up for work).

My migraines present as kaleidoscope vision, nausea/vomiting and a numb face. As long as I can be cool (lay on bathroom floor kind of thing) then those symptoms go away after 4/5hours.

I’m left with a headache, tired (although they often come at night so more a symptom of being up all night) and am ridiculously tearful…I want to spend the day after having a constant cry, a friend said by to me today at her house and I welled up. I’m so tearful.

This is not an unusual post migraine day for me but speaking to a friend today who has never had this symptom I’m wondering if it’s a bit weird and why I have it

Postdrome the migraine hangover. These days my migraines are mostly over quite quickly due to the right meds and lots of experience managing them, but there's seemingly nothing I can do about the migraine postdrome which can last a few days (or the predome the aura symptoms which are awful)

This shows the migraine phases

I’m always ‘hungover’ for at least 24hrs. Sumatriptan has changed my life though and gets rid so quickly

I get tearful because I'm absolutely exhausted after fighting off a migraine. It feels like sleep deprivation x a million.

That chart is very interesting, it's the only one I've seen that mentions post migraine euphoria. I get this sometimes and it's so strange and actually scary, because I absolutely know it's chemicals flooding my brain and I start to wonder if I might never get back to normal. Probably doesn't make much sense but it's a very odd experience.

Akire · 14/09/2021 21:02

Yes I’ve never seen anything pre before my first idea is visual disturbance but in that chart already had day or two of not feeling quiet right. I must try and be on ball more

Coffeeonmytoffee · 14/09/2021 21:06

I feel very emotional. I think it's exhausting and I always feel a bit scared my body has betrayed me almost.
My dad was always in a terrible mood after a migraine.
They are such strange things.

MauveMavis · 14/09/2021 21:09

I get it too. It's awful.

TheFoundations · 14/09/2021 21:11

Yup. I usually feel like somebody has turned all my emotional dials to random settings, sometimes tearful, sometimes anxious, and about 4 times in my life so far, raging euphoria, which is fantastic when you're in it but really quite embarrassing to look back on...

Nothing unusual in your symptoms OP.

AudTheDeepMinded · 14/09/2021 21:15

@TheNarwhalBalloon me too, I get quite giddy and high sometimes the day after a migraine, feel I can conquer the world. I've put it down to sheer relief that the pain has gone but I think it could be chemical too. You're the first person who I have encountered to say that they get it too.

AutistGoth · 14/09/2021 21:15

I used to cry after epileptic seizures (under control now, thank goodness). Apparently it's normal. Flowers

Weirdly, I always feel high and slightly drunk after a migraine. Not necessarily unpleasant, just weird.

iknowwhatyoudid · 14/09/2021 21:17

I feel a bit spaced out, I get clumsy and slur my words. If not slurring my words I just struggle to get my words out all together. Usually for a day or two after migraine attack.

duckme · 14/09/2021 22:20

@ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun

Yep, it's called a Postdrome. Also known as a migraine hangover.
I never knew this was actually a thing! I often say I have a 'hangover' for a day or so after a migraine. It's literally the same as if I'd been drinking heavily, craving greasy food, exhausted, moody, feeling just bleurgh. OP, I have sometimes have really low mood after a migraine. They just wipe you out, don't they?
CornishGem1975 · 15/09/2021 20:06

I get migraines with aura and no pain. They are intense but brief but afterwards I am wiped out. I could curl up in a ball and I need lots of soft soothing strokes!

SpamIAm · 15/09/2021 20:41

While you're all here...does anyone else get a kind of crackle behind their nose during a migraine which is absolute agony?

Not currently with migraine, but I had that for ages when I was getting over labyrinthitis (took about 8 months to stop feeling run down), and my sinuses have never been right since.
Umbongoumbongo999 · 15/09/2021 22:23

I call my day after symptoms my 'migraine hangover '

MaidEdithofAragon · 15/09/2021 22:30

Opposite to you, op, but post- migraine I feel a bit of a buzz. Quite jumpy and extra alert. Slightly hyper. Just goes to show how it messes with your brain chemistry. The feeling dissipates after about a day.

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/09/2021 23:07

Yes I get similar OP. Migraines take a huge toll on the body, they're criminally glossed over given how disabling they are. Mine can last several days at a time and I am entirely not myself when they're over and can be very tearful and down. It's knackering, painful, relentless and all just a bit much!

Sorry you're suffering though. Re: cold I find cheap gel packs (a few pounds on amazon) a lifesaver. Keep in the fridge and wrap around the back of the neck and forehead or use as a pillow. I always have a fridge full so I can swap them for fresh ones once theyve warmed up from the heat of my head.
