If you have a larger than average house and family what are you paying each month for gas and electricity?

Ours has just gone up to around £300 pcm

House is 5 bed and 2 bathrooms. Eight of us live here. Tumble dryer and dishwasher both ran 2-4 times a day. Games consoles, tv etc

Family of 6 with a five bed 3 bath. Ours has gone up to £250 per month. We have a full cohort of solar too.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 06:52

Ty @Yellowbowlbanana that has reassured me a bit that i'm not paying a ridiculous amount.

Sounds about right. We have a 4 bed, 2 bath and only 3 of us and we pay £180 a month. DP works from home so here all the time.

We are a 4 bed, 3 bath, 5 people. Dishwasher daily, washing machine and tumble dryer 4 times daily each. £180 presently.

DaxtheDestroyer · 14/09/2021 07:10

We have a 5 bed, 3 bath with 5 of us. No gas, we are rural so only have oil. Elec is £90/month, oil averages £100/month but is more expensive to run than gas.

AlphaJura · 14/09/2021 07:10

4 bed, 5 people, here all the time, only 1 bathroom, no tumble dryer. We pay about £134 for both per month. I'm glad that seems about right because some people are shocked I pay that much, but that's usually coming from people who live alone or only 2 in the house.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 07:16

£134 in total for the two @AlphaJura? If so thats low and i am impressed!

Be prepared for an expensive winter for gas especially. DH works in the energy industry and everyone will be facing energy price increases this winter.

We've already turned the temperature on the boiler way down for hot water in preparation.

poshme · 14/09/2021 07:26

Same as Dax -we are rural so no mains gas. LPG costs average £100 a month, and our electricity is £68. We have solar for the hot water.
5 beds, 5 people. Have a fire in the winter to try and reduce gas usage, but I'm full time at home.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 07:30

@Stellaris22 funnily enough i turned the water down a bit before while thinking about this!

What temp do others have their water set at?

4 bed here, 2 adults WFH, washer dryer on pretty permanently! I have a bath most nights.

We've also been running a hot tub since March and air con over the summer and looking at the last year we pay between £220-£280 a month for energy

Skyla2005 · 14/09/2021 07:36

We all need to make sure our tariffs are fixed because they are going to hike up the prices very soon. Even if you don't want to move to a fixed with a different company make sure the one you have now is fixed or you will be paying a lot more than you already are

Impatientwino · 14/09/2021 07:36

2 dc in the house also

If you only have 2 adults why is your washing machine on permanently ?
THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 07:41

I've just switched to a fixed tarif thanks for the prompt @Skyla2005

Family of 7, 5 bedrooms. £200 a month.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 14/09/2021 08:32

The amount people use their washers/dryers baffles me. I understand when you have kids you obviously use them a lot more but as a couple we do 3 loads a week, 1 light, 1 colours/darks and 1 on a Friday for DPs work stuff and my gym stuff. According to MN I'm slovenly for chucking towels/bedding in with everything else but even if I didn't that would only make it 4 loads a week!

Jerseygirl12 · 14/09/2021 08:43

I have a large four bedroom newish build house with two living rooms and a massive kitchen/diner and utility room. I have a solar panel and my dual fuel is £99 per month. It was £79 but recently went up. We are a family of 4 adults at home during the day. I do a wash once a day, don’t tumble dry or iron, we have multiple TV’s, games consoles, a PC etc. I think the solar panel helps as I have south facing garden.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 08:48

I dont know why its hard to understand @MrsMcCluskeysCat, there are 4 times more people in my house than in yours including a baby, a toddler and two high school dc who need a full clean gym kit 3 times a week. Washing our bedding once a week is probably three loads!

I said I understand if there are kids/more people in the house. I meant I didn't understand how couples did so many loads.
THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 08:55

Fair enough but how is that relevant to a thread about larger households?

OP posts:
bellsbuss · 14/09/2021 08:56

Family of 6 , 6 bedrooms , 4 bathrooms and ours is £180 combined. Our house is really well insulated and fairly new boiler.

AdditionalCharacter · 14/09/2021 08:59

2 adults, 3 teenagers in a 4 bed mid terrace house, combined bill of £96 a month. Meter readings all correct.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 14/09/2021 09:14

Because someone commented further up that as a couple they have their washer/dryer on most of the time...so I was simply responding to that (as has someone else).

Our bedding takes an entire load (king size) on its own. And if we were only a couple it's probably be: 1 dark, 1 light, 1 sports stuff, 1 towels, 1 bedding. But we have 3 kids...
