THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 06:46

If you have a larger than average house and family what are you paying each month for gas and electricity?

Ours has just gone up to around £300 pcm

House is 5 bed and 2 bathrooms. Eight of us live here. Tumble dryer and dishwasher both ran 2-4 times a day. Games consoles, tv etc

7 bed, 3 bath. About 180 a month and I wfh.

It's victorian but it's very well insulated and the second floor is not heated unless we have guests or it goes below freezing.

Ibruprofenismydrugofchoice · 14/09/2021 09:25

5 bed, 5 people, at least 2 people here at all times. 3 young kids so washing machine and dishwasher on at least twice a day. Run a hot tub in the garden. £150 a month for both. I thought that was high!

Ibruprofenismydrugofchoice · 14/09/2021 09:27

For context, we are 3 people, £120 a month for both, washing machine and dishwasher on every day

BurningBenches · 14/09/2021 09:40

Just gone up to £300 pm here too.

2 adults and 4 kids (11,10,2,3m) and 3 dogs. Dogs mentioned as they add to the washing. Youngest 2 are in cloth nappies. 4 bed house,.with Gas CH.

We are with British Gas.

Samanabanana · 14/09/2021 09:43

We pay £280 a month and there's only three of us. Fairly large house but not a mansion by any means. Both wfh and often have the washer and dryer going daily. We need to do a shop around but I don't think we'll chop much off the bill sadly.

Impatientwino · 14/09/2021 10:18

@Skyla2005 we have 2 DC as well as I said in my following post

cherrytreecottage · 14/09/2021 10:22

We are 5 bed, 4 bathroom, washing machine & tumble dryer on once a day; We have an immersion tank for hot water which I know is expensive but only comes on for an hour in the morning and evening. Just been told ours is going up by £100 to £350 pm! Usage is consistent over last 2 years.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 10:29

@BurningBenches we are british gas too, mine is now about £315 which definitley sounds right next to yours

No arrears! Account is nearly £400 in credit at the moment too but usually evens out over the winter. They emailed in August to say it was going up £40 per month as of 1st October, then again last week to say that due to increasing prices DD was going up £60. Initially assumed the £60 superseded the £40 email but when I called them they confirmed it was in addition to!! When I queried it, they said we use 3x the average household but when I pointed out that the usage had been exactly the same over the past 2 years..they said it was simply due to increased energy prices.
I'll be switching of course, but it's been a military operation this week shouting at everyone to turn switches off, nagging teen DDs when things end up back in the wash bin when I know I only hung it up the day before GrinGrin I knew I'd got bad when I used the "Blackpool illuminations" line haha.

BurningBenches · 14/09/2021 11:33

@THATmamaofMANY it has was about £100 for both a few years ago its rocketed recently.

Ibruprofenismydrugofchoice · 14/09/2021 11:34

You all pay a fortune. We have a hot water tank, a 25 year old boiler, a hot tub, 2 of us working from home, 3 kids including a toddler so lots of washing etc and it’s £150 a month for both.

THATmamaofMANY · 14/09/2021 11:41

@Ibruprofenismydrugofchoice how big is your house?

A large 4 bed detached. 3 bathrooms, 3 reception rooms.

Puffalicious · 14/09/2021 11:42

This has reassured me as I thought we were paying loads, but not really compared to others.

4 bed,5 of us and run dishwasher and washing machine once every day (large loader). 2 teens need PE kit 4 times a week and rugby kit 3 times a week- drives me insane. I also like to be warm so our heating is set to 21 degrees but switches off once gets above that - ambient heat, complex thingy.

We're £206 a month for both.

pheasantlysuprised · 14/09/2021 12:08

We live in an old 5 bed detached house. 2 adults, three kids.

We all shower daily, washing machine is never off, I use the tumble drier for every load even during the summer.

We do have hive so all rooms are individually controlled. Toddlers room and the playroom are back to clicking on now that the temp has dropped slightly ( set to 19 degrees) the other rooms at the minute are still comfortable. I'm generally in the playroom with the youngest during the day so I often turn it up because I hate feeling cold.

We often have house guests so that's another couple of showers and extra bedding to wash etc

we are up north so cooler then our southern counterparts.

Our combined bill is £134 ... I didn't realise how cheap that was in comparison to what some posters are paying

BoofTheFloof · 14/09/2021 12:13

6 bedroom. 3 bathroom. 3 living areas. 4 people, 2 of whom work from home permanently. Tumble dryer at least once a day. Son has gaming system. Multiple laptops and devices. Electric oven and induction hob.
Cost now changed to £320 a month. Bit of a shock.

Puffalicious · 14/09/2021 17:45

pleasantly surprised who on Earth are you with? That's fabulous. I limit tumble dryer to the minimum and I'm still much more.

ablutiions · 14/09/2021 17:49

4 bed, 2 bath, 4 full time adults, everyone home all day, plus several small kids in the day. Our usage is about twice average (!)

Bill £200 per month through Bulb. If you want a referral code please PM me. I just did I a prove comparison and they are the cheapest by a long shot.

HTH

Daftasabroom · 14/09/2021 17:57

200m2, 5 beds, 3 bath, 4 occupants. £130 all in pcm, electricity only, no gas or oil. Total elec = 10,000kWhr pa.

We doubled the size of our home and made huge efforts to improve energy efficiency. Insulated to 3x current regs in places. Super airtight. Heat recovery and ventilation unit. No heating requiment upstairs. Next step air source heat pump and may be able to halve it again.

Lunariagal · 14/09/2021 17:59

5 bed, 1 bath, 2 adults, 2 teens.

Currently on a fix at £108 per month. Fix ending and offered a fix with same company at £175. And that seems to be one of the cheapest fixes out there.

Some shocking price rises out there. Have found a cheaper deal at £145 but still a huge price increase.

CaptaNoctem · 14/09/2021 18:02

7 bedroom/ 4 bathroom house with two adults - it's around £240 a month for gas and electricity.

Mintjulia · 14/09/2021 18:20

4 bed house, about 2,000 sq feet, costs £1200 a year for gas & electric. We also use a log burner to delay turning the central heating on, as we live rurally.

DancingQueen85 · 14/09/2021 18:23

We are a similar sized home with similar bills but only 4 people.
However we do have a hot tub which we think adds much more than the £1 a day we were told when we purchased it 😬
