Do people really pay that much?

DP bitten by dog. Phoned 111 and they'd like us to go in but won't provide transport (fair enough, we all know how swamped ambulances are at the mo). Problem is they also advised DP doesn't drive and I can't drive. Taxis are £45 one way (35 mins away to the hospital), £90 there and back.

Do people really pay this?! Do people just have £90 floating around spare? Slightly gobsmacked as to how we're meant to sort this tbh!

We're very rural and don't know anyone up here yet. I don't really think there is a solution. DP really can't drive. What a pain in the arse.

Oh no, we have a car but they've advised DP doesn't drive because they have a headache and they're worried about concussion. I can't drive because I have a broken knee.

I would just drive if I were your DH, unless he is incapacitated by the bite (unlikely).

How would he have concussion from a dog bite? Unfortunately this is the downside of rural living, animal attacks and expensive taxis

Even though 111 said not to? Really worried they'd cause an accident, they have quite a bad headache since the bite and NHS 24 were worried it's concussion. Not sure that would be safe really.

How badly bitten is he? Is it a face or hand? Is it because there is tendon injury or massive flesh loss or because he needs a tetanus booster ? Could he wait to see his GP in the morning?

The concussion has me stumped though if he's not banged his head. Does he have any obvious infection running from the bite?

It's the face. Maybe that's why they're thinking concussion - because of the potential impact? It's upper cheek, just below the eye.

Good thinking re GP. That might work. I just hate the idea of not listening to 111 although I know people do it all the time Grin

DP now doesn't seem that bothered and is trying to argue her way out of having to go with logic Hmm

Well it sounds unfortunate that you both can’t drive currently. So you find someone else who can and is willing to take you, fork out for a taxi (and in future have cash tucked away in case you need to do that again), don’t go this evening and possibly find a way to go tomorrow.

Honestly I’d call 111 back explain you’ll struggle to get to a&e and ask if GP can offer tetanus at surgery tomorrow

Living rurally, we expect to have to drive for everything, including injuries that aren’t life threatening or where the person can be moved safely without an EMT. Driving is essential. Since you have a rare circumstance where you are both incapacitated, then yes, if you can actually get a taxi, paying for one is the expectation. I’m just impressed a taxi is an option at all.

Just answered above re why potential concussion - we don't think she has concussion but then we're not trained medically. No dilated pupils and she's not confused or drowsy, just has a sore head.

No obvious infection no, just bruising and swelling.

Oh and she had a tetanus shot 9 years ago.

Can you phone back 111? Not had to phone them for a while - don't really want to clog up the lines!

It was our own dog Sad She is a scared, normally gentle rescue, who got spooked by something in the garden. She's never lashed out before. I think DP at this point is more worried about the dog than herself!

In answer to your first question, yes, plenty of people can fork out £90 in taxi fares at the drop of a hat. Our local taxi service accepts card payments.

I hope your DP is OK, and you recover from your knee injury quickly.
