Does anyone with medical knowledge know what it's called when you bleed from the rectum? I can't remember what my gp called it and never heard of it before.

I've got crohns disease and have been losing large amounts of blood. Saw my gp today who asked me if I'd ever had a 'fright bleed'. Well, I think that's what she said but Google has drawn a blank. I must have looked confused and she said 'have you ever just passed blood without any stool?'

Does anyone know what term she used, that sounds like fright bleed? I wished I'd asked now!

Frank bleed?

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 13/09/2021 20:12

Agreed. I was thinking that they probably meant frank blood/frank bleeding.

polkadotpixie · 13/09/2021 20:16

Yeah definitely frank bleed. I work in the Colorectal department and it's used a lot

I don't think that's very helpful for OP's GP to use that term .How is she supposed to be familiar with the expression ?

@Hotbot272 Chrons is horrible ,I do hope your GP was able to suggest a plan to help .

Thank you, I think you're all right.

polkadotpixie what does it refer to? I've had a quick Google but would appreciate it in idiots terms 😄

peridito thank you, it is horrible. I've been struggling to contact my consultant, she was absolutely fantastic and is kicking some arses for me!

Yes a frank bleed, just fresh blood nothing else.

polkadotpixie · 13/09/2021 20:53

@Hotbot272 I'm in Colorectal admin rather than clinical (along the lines of medical secretary) but I process a lot of referrals for this and to the best of my knowledge it's fresh red PR bleeding

My daughter has crohns which was originally diagnosed as Ulcerative colitis... symptoms of this was bleeding from the rectum.
Not sure if this helps, but I hope you find the right treatment 🤗

Gingernaut · 13/09/2021 21:12

There's a difference between 'frank' bleeding, that's bright red and probably from the colon or rectum and 'occult' blood from further up the bowel.

Hotbot272 · 13/09/2021 21:41

Thankyou everyone.

mug2018 I hope your daughters doing well. I've had crohns for over 20 years but just in the last year have been diagnosed with pancolitis and ileitis which explains the recent bleeding I've been having, it's a new symptom to me (hence me not being up on the terminology).
