I saw this on HUKD and thought it may be of interest to those with children who are interested in space -

NASA are offering you the amazing opportunity to send your name to Mars, for FREE! This a wonderful and unique opportunity to get your name into space, and would be the perfect gift for any science enthusiast!

Why are you reopening this opportunity?

There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Mars 2020 mission and its Perseverance rover, which carried the names of 10.9 million people aboard. However, since the Mars 2020 opportunity closed, many people have since expressed interest in sending their name to Mars. For those who missed the chance to fly their names on Perseverance, we want to give them the chance to sign up to fly their names on a future mission to Mars.

On what spacecraft will my name fly?

Your name will fly on a future NASA mission to Mars in the mid-2020’s. The spacecraft hasn’t been identified but we are taking names now that will eventually be placed on a spacecraft headed to Mars.

When will this new opportunity close?

This opportunity will remain open and does not have a close date yet. A close date will be announced as the mission that will fly the names is identified. That’s a few years away, so in the meantime, tell your friends and family to sign up!

What does submitting my name do?

All submitted names are reviewed, approved and then etched onto a microchip. The microchip is placed aboard the flight which will land on Mars.

Noooo.

The aliens will use it to track you down, abduct you so that they can experiment on you.

illuyankas · 12/09/2021 18:20

Thank you, I'll let my dc know. I think they will be very excited!

ArtemisiaVulgaris · 12/09/2021 18:23

They'll use this information to track you down and use you for food during the manned Mars Mission. They'll be making people into freeze dried kebabs or something.

SummerHouse · 12/09/2021 18:30

You know it's actually your soul they are sending right?

SummerHouse · 12/09/2021 18:45

I take back my above comment. It's really cool. Just sent my DS.

Soubriquet · 12/09/2021 18:50

I thank you. I’ve done it both with my dc

Soubriquet · 12/09/2021 18:55

Ok…ds immediately started freaking out saying “but I don’t want to go to Mars…”

Dd just laughed and said it was weird Confused

So not really appreciated

illuyankas · 12/09/2021 19:35

I think it's a really cool idea. Part of you(name) is travelling into the space, that won't happen often!

Daisychainsandglitter · 12/09/2021 20:07

Thanks OP. I've done one for my kids too.

AlvinSimonTheo · 12/09/2021 20:44

I don't know why this makes me feel weird!

olivermcfuddling · 12/09/2021 20:46

What an utterly pointless thing

Mariell · 12/09/2021 20:48

What an utterly pointless thing
It’s very popular! People like making up funny names as well as printing off the boarding pass in their children’s name for children that enjoy space themed things!

Hmm I don't get it! But if it makes someone happy that's a good thing. . ( but I don't get it)

Animum2 · 13/09/2021 04:57

My dh and I put our names on the 2020 mission

Zeal · 13/09/2021 05:29

I am not comfortable with the over commercialisation of space, which is where NASA and other agencies and states are heading. There is much to do on this planet to prove that humans are sustainable before we start programmes to explore colonisation of the rest of the galaxy.
