Difficulty swallowing food

Could there be any other reason apart from worse case scenarios for not being able to swallow food properly and it getting ‘stuck’? It’s been happening to my partner for a few weeks now. Being referred within 2 weeks but panicking and stressing massively. Thank you.

I had awful problems swallowing and food getting stuck, after an endoscopy I was diagnosed with a stricture and had it stretched. I have to have it stretched periodically.

Yes . I had it with anxiety . Has he been stressed lately ?

kimlo · 12/09/2021 13:55

could be a retrosternal goiter.

Hopefulbride18 · 12/09/2021 14:03

Who have they referred to?

I'm a dysphagia trained Speech therapist so I work with lots of people with swallowing difficulties.. It could be a large range of things.

Does he have any other health concerns or diagnoses?

My DH had problems with food getting stuck in his oesophagus. They used endoscopy to remove a particularly stuck bit, kind of shaved off some extra tissue that was narrowing the tube, and he takes omeprazole every to manage inflammation from stomach acid.

As Hopefulbride18 has said, a Dysphagia trained Speech Therapist can help immensely, do ask for a referral as soon as possible.

Hi - as a few P Ps have alluded, this could be related to issues with food pipe. I dealt with a similar problem called Achalasia. Suggest you get a xray& endoscopy etc to determine the issue and do push for a quicker review with the specialist, as Nhs can be notoriously slow with the multiple steps of tests & specialist appointments.

In the interim, can u work out any triggers? Mine are...workstress, cold food, large bites, significant gaps between meals. Mine just seizes mid swallow. It's bloody painful

Rummikub · 13/09/2021 07:59

I have this sometimes. Doc said it could be dry mouth and I can have a e do scope to check it’s nothing else.
Dry mouth as a result of meds.
