Present help for hippy SIL's 50th birthday

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/09/2021 10:59

SIL is going to be 50 and DP is being a bit slow on the present front.

She is very hippy and alternative, which isn't my world at all so I don't want to fall into a cliched trap and think narrowly about it.

She is a Wirral-based vegetarian yoga teacher and masseuse, has a degree in fine art and lots of artistic/crafty inclinations but not a good workspace and doesn't necessarily work at art in a sustained way.

Things she has liked recently:
Pagan flower headdress crafting lessons
Indian squeezebox instrument that looks like an accordion for chanting
Bell tent and accessories
Foraging course
Drumming camp

All of this is so alien to me! But I want to get her either a thing or an experience she will really like and if anyone has a great idea I would be really grateful. Particularly in the Wirral/Liverpool/north Wales area. Budget is not really an issue as DP is feeling guilty about not getting it sorted sooner and will throw money at it if necessary.

One of my go to presents is a silk pillowcase, John Lewis do them for £45.

A really lovely singing bowl?

Interested in this thread?

Would she enjoy a circus skills course or one around sustainability etc?

WeevilKnievel · 11/09/2021 11:09

On This Morning a few days ago they had these quite cool water bottles with an inbuilt crystal to diffuse the water. I thought to myself at the time how much a 'hippy' would probably love one as a gift 😊

TheCheeseBadge · 11/09/2021 11:17

Is there a fairly local residential yoga/ meditation retreat that you could send her on?

Woodswoman · 11/09/2021 11:18

A pair of festival tickets for something next year? Maybe to a more thoughtful one like Medicine than a major music festival.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/09/2021 11:21

Thank you for all these ideas. I can imagine her loving a singing bowl, which I had never heard of before. She does love a noisy thing that she can use to annoy her mother! But also I can see the idea of it for meditation so it would be a double benefit. I'll look into the festivals thing, too - she loves festivals and I'd never heard of Medicine.

Wool& dress/tunic. £140 pricey but merino wool, and she can join the online FB group full of us hippy types and discuss eco washing powder.Smile

Swerve this option if she is vegan (some don't wear wool) but sound it out if it's fine for a veggie to wear. (I am veg but I wear leather and wool)

Comes in a range of fits, and sleeve lengths. some lovely autumnal colours, goes with everything and I would guess the average age range of the FB group is between 40-50 (I'm 35, it's not an age thing it's just a summary of most of the posts I've seen).

She sounds good fun, I can only aspire to drumming and foraging (once I'm past the little kid stage of life)

Or, ffern (an organic boutique perfume thing, very swishy) but that's a more complicated option as there's a waiting list and a subscription. (Obviously I don't actually have a ffern perfume bc of the faff but I've heard good things)

MinnieJackson · 11/09/2021 11:29

Nozstock festival tickets for next year? Food foraging guide? New cookware? Bird feeders, dream catchers etc?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/09/2021 11:30

She is good fun! She winds her brother up enormously but I think she's great.

Any gong bath events you could book for her?
They are lovely.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/09/2021 11:35

Some Lucy and yak dungarees, a nice bamboo travel cutlery set, a hamper of none plastic toiletries.

Have a look on babipur, they might have some good ideas?

NameChangeinHaste · 11/09/2021 11:36

Crystal advent calendar?

PeriWrinkles · 11/09/2021 11:38

Sound therapy/gong therapy session, they have them in that area. Or go to Rainforest shop on Rows in Chester for more ideas.

Ninkanink · 11/09/2021 11:42

Something made by ‘Off on a whim’ - you can find her on Facebook/Instagram/Etsy. She makes beautiful jewellery with semi-precious stones, all hand made by her.

Something like a tree of life sun catcher or maybe a pendant/bracelet.

(I’m not her btw!)

arapacis · 11/09/2021 19:21

Please don't buy a real silk pillowcase. It's a really cruel process that usually means the silk worms die - if she's veggie she might not be into that!

Leeds3 · 12/09/2021 20:49

A stained or fused glass making course.

RiverSkater · 12/09/2021 21:00

A himalayen salt rock lamp.

Good for breathing issues apparently. Look lovely!

bookish83 · 12/09/2021 21:03

I saw on another thread you can get Artful subscription boxes- they look great!

Silk is not always in line with veggies. Definitely not for vegans so you might want to check!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/09/2021 21:05

These are all great ideas, thank you. I think her mum (they live together) will cut up rough if I introduce fermenting to the kitchen but lots of other fun options here and even if not for this birthday, might be great for other birthdays and Christmases.

Something from Sculpd? They do pottery kits.
