Unexpectedly, what would you spend it on?

No family needs. It's just me and the baby and he has more than everything he could want. No debt aside mortgage that's easily affordable. No childcare and just back at work after maternity so not a holiday. I have savings.

My father gave me a thousand pounds in an envelope today because he thinks I've been incredibly strong since DH walked out on us a month ago and "I deserve a treat". I've genuinely no idea where to start... ideas please!

Teeth whitening is the best treat I gave myself. Absolutely recommend it as a total boost. How lovely of DF.

roarfeckingroarr · 10/09/2021 19:42

@Jobhunterhelp what sort of teeth whitening did you do?

NoSquirrels · 10/09/2021 19:43

Holiday - week at a hotel geared up for taking kids along with childcare available, and a spa.

Hippychickster · 10/09/2021 19:43

I would go to Ragdale Hall for a few days with or without a friend.
And probably leave the baby with your lovely dad Smile if that were possible

wishingchair1 · 10/09/2021 19:45

Annual passes to something. London Zoo if you are in London. Great for a few hours and no pressure if you decide not to go.

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 10/09/2021 19:45

Sample sets from some niche perfume houses to try with a view to selecting three or four to buy. You'll get pleasure from them for a long time, could spark a new interest and you'll think of the generous gift everytime you wear them.

SunSeaSurfGin · 10/09/2021 19:46

My df did similar recently and I brought new iPad and keeping the rest for when I see a new nice watch or some I like.

When I asked the question you did op to my friends they said they'd save it

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 10/09/2021 19:47

Or (warming to my theme Wink) get a bespoke perfume made for yourself

lils088 · 10/09/2021 19:48

What a lovely DF ! I would
get a massage/ facial
buy a new winter coat/ boots
Get my hair / nails done
Take my DF out for lunch
Maybe donate 10% to a charity

Enjoy spending every penny! Sounds like you deserve it x

HappyAsASandboy · 10/09/2021 19:51

I would spend it over a year, on things that make me feel better. For me this would be;

Massage
Facial
Spa day
Hairdresser just because (rather than a needed cut)
Taxi when public transport feels too hard
Take out when I am tired

I'd keep it in cash in an envelope in the cupboard and consciously spend it on those types of things until it was gone. It might take less than a year, or it might last longer than a year. But each spend from the envelope would be on something I wouldn't find myself; a luxury that I could say "thank you" for, if only in my head.

OnlyFlans · 10/09/2021 19:52

I'd use some of the money to get a regular subscription to something so I have a gift arriving every month or quarter.

Food/ recipe box?
Flowers?
Magazine?
Gin or cocktails?

BlueButterfliesAndPurpleStars · 10/09/2021 19:52

How lovely ☺️

If you have everything you need, I believe the rule of thumb is to spend it on an experience rather than a possession.

Memories will stay, possessions you'll get used to / have to replace etc.

What have you always fancied doing? Holiday? Sky diving? Spa weekend?

Though when I got a small windfall, I bought hue lights for behind the tv / lightbulbs Blush Totally against the above, but I loooove lights, there's something about them, and they still make me happy a year and a half later. Feel like total luxury 😂

roarfeckingroarr · 10/09/2021 19:52

@Hippychickster I would but he's nearly 80 and my DM died many many years ago so while he is the most emotionally supportive and financially generous grandfather, it wouldn't be fair on him to leave my toddling maniac with him for more than an hour.

@OnlyFlans flower subscription is a brilliant thought

Yes I'd definitely spend it on longer term experiences to make life more easier and fun.

Yes soak and sleep 20% goose father and 80% down.. Love them.

Also mattress toppers are great.

roarfeckingroarr · 10/09/2021 19:55

The temptation to spend it on a sleep consultant for the co-sleeping demon is strong

Sorry not sure how to tag... it was the one you wear overnight every night for 2 weeks. I chose this as if I found it sensitive I could skip a nighy or too. Then as you have the mouth guard you can top up every few months, before a special occasion for example. I absolutely love the difference. Cost about £250, 6 years ago.

SalsaLove · 10/09/2021 19:56

Save it and then take a nice holiday next year. No need to spend it immediately.

roarfeckingroarr · 10/09/2021 19:57

I just want to thank everyone again for taking the time to post. I know I'm so, so lucky and even more so to have a job that means I don't need anything. My DF is the most wonderful person and I wish I could just buy him better health.

I would spend it on a personal styling session and some nice new clothes, I’ve come to the conclusion that I hate everything in my wardrobe and want a new totally different style but don’t really know where to start.

NothingIsWrong · 10/09/2021 19:58

I would do a couple of really nice subscription boxes a month. Flowers, nice snacks, cheese, gin, stationery

Bontanics · 10/09/2021 20:02

I'd spend the lot on a really good bed with a lambswool mattress, luxurious sheets and plump pillows. I'd say a decade of good sleep is a good place to invest that kind of money.

meadowbleu · 10/09/2021 20:04

I don't have great ideas, although I was going to suggest a flower delivery subscription if you like flowers in the house. That's already been put forward though.

Otherwise if it were me, I'd buy a membership to the National Trust or English Heritage where I could take days out, even if it was just for good walks in parkland. You could add your lovely DF possibly.

Other than that I'd just splurge on something that made me really happy. A piece of artwork or jewellery maybe?

You sound really strong and sorted. Long may that continue. And DF sounds wonderful, so big love to him too.

Is there anything (experience wise Grin) you could do with him together?

Doesn't have to be with all of it - maybe with just part. But to celebrate how supportive he is and how much you appreciate him?
