Do we all need to buy electric cars before October then?
I don't understand. Help please 🙀

Do you mean London?
You can check your car at this website, but unless it's an older diesel it's probably fine.

I've checked it.
It says it's ok at the moment apart from in the congestion zone. But won't this change after the ULEZ expands?

Yes London.

So if it just says the congestion charge is payable, is that different from ULEZ? Or is that just not showing up yet.

DH and I have just had to sell two non ULEZ compliant cars and bought new ones as we were caught by the expansion in October. We've bought newer petrol cars which are compliant. They don't need to be electric.

edwinbear · 10/09/2021 17:06

What registration is you car OP? If it's 2006 or later you should be fine, but the congestion charge will still apply.

ItllBeOverByChristmas · 10/09/2021 17:07

That means that you'll have to pay the congestion charge because it's not electric, but you don't need to worry about the ULEZ at all.

sashagabadon · 10/09/2021 17:08

I think it’s mostly diesel and older cars and big engine cars,

bathorshower · 10/09/2021 17:13

Given our 10 year old family estate (petrol) is ULEZ compliant, I would have thought there would be plenty of cars out there that are OK - we would have to pay the congestion charge though.

Are you only just seeing this now? They have been talking about it for ages!

RubySlippers123 · 10/09/2021 17:22

I'm just confused!

So ulez and the congestion charge are different??!

OP posts:
ItllBeOverByChristmas · 10/09/2021 17:23

Yes. Different charge, different eligibility, different areas. Congestion charge is about congestion. Emissions zone is about emissions.

RubySlippers123 · 10/09/2021 17:28

Thank you. Was having a small panic & wondering why everyone else wasn't! 😹

My (big, older, diesel) car isn't ULEZ compliant but most others are. I wouldn't worry too much unless your current vehicle fails on all of those criteria!

ThePlantsitter · 10/09/2021 18:25

I got rid of my old diesel a while ago because I knew it wouldn't be compliant (despite them going on about diesel being cleaner when I bought it Hmm). I am asthmatic so I'm really hoping it's going to make a difference to the air quality here.
