Hi,
A very special friend turns 40 in a couple of weeks. I have no idea what to get her, but I'd like it to be special. £60ish budget. Please can I ask you what was the best 40th (or any birthday) present that you received? Thank you.

I bought my brother a canvas print. He likes motorsport so bought him a print of a Monaco race from his birth year, with a car in the picture which had the number of his age (eg 1972 Le Mans car had 50 on the door)

Thank you. I did think about a piece of art, but it's just so personal. I wouldn't want her to feel like she has to put it up. Her husband would have to like it too, it just feels a bit risky.

Thinking of art, you can commission someone to do a picture, so perhaps her name initial outlined with drawings of things inside that reflect her, so her pet(s), perhaps image of lab stuff if she's a scientist or animals if she's a

In thst field, motorbike or car if she's an enthusiast etc ...

Definitely an experience day

I was given a beautiful necklace with 4 discs engraved with my DC's initials, DH's and mine - and a star for our lost DD. It's beautiful. I then bought one for a friend for her 40th - think it was around £60 from here - www.bloom-boutique.co.uk/

Someone gave me a really classy vase, probably would be about £60 now, which I wouldn't have spent myself but it is gorgeous and just such high quality.

I got a golden spade. It’s amazing for someone who likes gardening!

The best present I ever got was for my 30th bday and made my by my ex sister in law. She got a big photo album and put pictures in it of me with all the various people in my life (family and close friends) and got them all to write wee notes to me saying what their memories of me were and what I meant to them. My dad wrote something lovely about remembering driving home after I was born and how happy he felt. My sister wrote about me being there on her wedding day as her bridesmaid walking in the mud so she didn't get her dress dirty. Lots of lovely things written down for me to keep. It was the best present ever.

WildNorthEast · 09/09/2021 20:14

@Ionlydomassivesones she is a busy mum, who works full time. She doesn't really have any interests of her own, apart from hanging out with her friends when she gets a chance and being the most loyal and funniest friend a girl could wish for!

These are all great ideas, thank you.

A very small rose bush which after just a couple of years is MASSIVE and makes me smile every day. You can get bushes that are named so may be able to find one the same as your friend or just these:

If she doesn't have a big garden you could buy a large tall (roses like deep roots) pot.

I would suggest a nice treat out together... afternoon tea or something like that? Most of us have too much 'stuff' in our life and unless you know someone incredibly well it is difficult to choose something on their behalf. A friend bought me a very pretty necklace for a special birthday but it really isn't something I would have chosen and I feel guilty that it's just sat in my 'jewellery box' (joke - I don't even wear much jewellery let alone have a box) for over 10 years. As I have moved away and don't really see the friend any more I have finally made the decision to donate the necklace to a charity I support, that will give me more pleasure than an unworn necklace but I still feel a bit guilty Blush.

It’s my 40th today and I’ve had some lovely jewellery and a photo album full of special memories. I’m sure she’ll love whatever you choose though Flowers

A ticket to see Harry Styles.
I bought it for myself for daft money on a resale sure and it was worth every penny.
